It has not gone well :(

Recommended Posts

Looks like my hatch has resulted in the grand sum of two chicks. Of which one has a very doubtful future :( It was clearly a problem with incubation, all my lovely IG's dead in shell. My last Dorking didn't manage to hatch, I ended up assisting ...and then having to cull. All in all, a very depressing day. Oh and my 4/o walked in as I was culling it, so now I am evil too!

I am in the process of trying to find stuff I can fleabay to try and fund a king suro. I am sure these poly incubators work for some people, but obviously I am not good enough at this. I thought the temp was holding fine, humidity remained 45% throughout, upped to 70% + from day 18....never missed a single turning... I don't know what else I could have done tbh - but I feel responsible for those poor little chicks (and my hopalong in the brooder that isn't really learning to walk).

Hmmmm, anyway, a bit discouraged right now..... Got batams due in 11 days but I chucked another one of them today, down to 4 now... (they are in the rcom though so there is a small glimmer of hope).

Sorry your hatch hasn't been a good experience. Sometimes things like this happen. My hatch before last went terrible to. 21 eggs in 3 chicks out

There is not much more you could have done so don't worry about it.

Good luck with the bantams

I think posting makes such a difference. My first batch this year (21) only 3 hatched and all were posted.

My second hatch (24) were all from my own birds or were collected and 18 hatched

My third hatch (15) were all from my own birds and 15 hatched :D

I errrr, accidently just had an accident with paypal and bought a suro

I wondered about posting, but all 6 IG made it to day 18??? I would have thought they would have failed before then??? Ahh well who knows, now to find me some eggs :D

ps. I haven't actually listed my stuff on ebay yet....oooooops!

Did you open the lid much after day 18, its tricky to sit on your hands sometimes and loss of humidity is a common cause of DIS

Due to the digital display on my R-COM20 I can tell that when I take the lid off it is back up to humidity and temperature within 30-60 seconds of the lid going back on - with a still air inccy this wouldn't be the case so everytime you open up to candle it will take a while to get back to the correct levels.

It is forced air rather than still TAJ, but I doubt it is as efficient :)

Got cuckoo maran and cream legbar on the way, got them both as they were ending with no bids, so not such a loss.

Little Sausage has twisted leg rather than splay, one is fine. The prognosis for this doesn't look as good... I am going to try and fashion a high heel for it today to try and get it to use its foot, other wise it walks on its hock with the foot in the air (hock quite swollen). I should dispatch it, but that would leave Bacon on her own (yep dd named again!), and my next lot aren't due for 10 days - and the biggies are big now....oh the quandry!

Deed done - poor thing was much worse, no way was it going to fix. The hock was horribly swollen with an open sore on it. It was cheeping loudly alot, so it was obviously in pain just trying to move  Not a nice start to the day really, I had let myself get a bit attached to that bundle of fluff, must not do that again....

Feeling a bit :vom: right now. But my suro was shipped this am!

I got my copy of Practical Poultry today and it recommeneds culling such birds. Sorry your hatch this time has been so difficult - at least it can only get better next time.

Same, I read it and thought of you. You have made the right decision. Hope it's better next time.

Was that splay or twisted leg or both? I should subscribe to that methinks. Breeder said I should have done it from the off...difficult one. But looking last night at various sites, there are people that go way toooooo far, fashioning chairs, or hobbling for months. Afraid that is not my idea of welfare - 'the inabilty to express natural behavious' pops to mind :/

Splayed leg can be fixed they do look awful for a few days but when the hobble comes off they get up and go!

I'd say you'd expect 50% sucess rate curing splayed leg

However yours sounded worse, a twisted leg doesnt bode well so I think you made the right decision
