More Flowers For My Garden

Recommended Posts

It has been over a year since I bought my last lot of flowers (rescue girls) so I thought I would treat myself.

I have reserved 2 hybrid chickens a Speckled Star and a White Star, going to collect them tomorrow. I know I will come back with more than two so I have put two pet carriers in the car.

Sadly today I have had to have Lily my Fenning White PTS :( She had never been a good layer, one prolapse, often laying softies or shells which were empty or very wierd wrinkly eggs. This morning she was hunched up in the corner of the WIR and egg was leaking from her vent, her comb had a blue tinge to it. The Vet agreed that putting her to sleep was the kindest thing to do. RIP Lilykins.

The White Star will be named Lily and the Speckled Star Iris. Daisy and Violet are names I have chosen for the other two Chickens which will end up in the second pet carrier, I would quite like a Sussex Star and maybe a Black Star or a Black Rock or a Bluebell :D

The new girls are here :D

A 5 1/2 hour round trip through blizzards, sleet and rain but worth it. Came home with the White Star and the Speckled Star, a Sussex Star now named Daisy and a Bluebelle who I have decided to name Bluebell :D

The chickens are still in the car with the window partly down, I had the car heater on full blast so I am waiting until the temperature evens out to the freezing cold outside before putting them in the Eglu.

Lily, Daisy and Iris safely tucked up in the Eglu, they went in themselves. Bluebell wouldn't come out of the pet carrier so the carrier is in the Eglu run with the door open, hopes she comes out soon as the weather is awful.

As soon as this lastest blizzard has subsided I will have to go and find another cover for the run and try to put it on by myself, it is very windy so that will be fun.

I will take photos at the weekend, Natalie is away and she has the camera.

Had my first proper look at them today. The weather was vile Tuesday and yesterday so they rightly stayed safe and warm in the Eglu popping out now and then for food and water. They are lovely birds :D , Daisy is so big and Lily has already got a lovely large red comb. Iris is a bit timid and Bluebell looks scary with her black face.

The other flowers and Bubbles are completely ignoring them, I wonder if that will change when I let the new girls out of the run next week.

The new flowers had their first free range this evening. I fed them some corn and we had a little chat. Daisy crouched when I went near her :D and Lily seemed quite friendly and didn't run away when I approached her, Lily the first would flee if I tried to get near her. Iris and Bluebell had a peck of my shoes.

All their combs have reddend considerably since I got them last week, eggs soon I hope :D

Five more flowers should be arriving in my garden tomorrow :D

Looking through the poultry section of my local ads paper today I came across an ad for 2 pure breed Speckled Sussex pullets and 3 RIR x Light Sussex x Cream Legbar pullets for the princely sum of £2  each. Phoned up straight away and reserved all five :D I had to ask if the price was a printing error but it was correct. The lady I spoke to said she doesn't breed Chickens for profit and only wants a nominal fee.

Four names already chosen, Poppy, Marigold, Violet and Rose. I need another flower name so ideas please, but not Tulip as my lovely, sweet Tulip passed away a few weeks ago.

Marigold, Violet, Rose, (Speckled Sussex), Poppy and Sweetpea (the itsa bitsa's ) have just been introduced to their green Eglu home :D

The speckled Sussex are huge and weigh a ton, very nice white speckles on their feathers, I can't tell them apart but I am sure I will see little differences as I get to know them. The itsa bitsa's are very pretty and petite, one is darker than the other so the lighter one is now named Sweetpea and the darker one Poppy.

Camera battery flat so no pictures yet.

I also liked the names Jasmine and Lavender and will use them when I get my longed for Marans :D
