Chucky Mama
Meet Kevin, he has just woken up from his winter sleep, just in time for Easter. He did say a brief hello at Christmas as he sleeps behind our heavy curtains in the living room and the noise woke him up for an hour or so (he was not impressed). Not a great photo but he is having a quick bath and a long drink.
Daphne
ooh - I don't know much about tortoises but what I do know I like Does he have a girlfriend? How old is he? Edited to add: I've just realised this sounds like a bizarre offer....it isn't

The Dogmother
Hello Kevin. Glad you explained that he was having a bath - I thought he was in a roasting pan!!! My friend has a fridge, kept at a relatively high temp, which is solely for her OH's beer and hibernating tortoises!

Edited to add: I've just realised this sounds like a bizarre offer....it isn't Kevin is about 40 now, he came to us about 6 years ago. He doesn't have a girlfriend but is rather fond of my walking boots He does have a best friend called Victor who comes to visit during the summer holidays. He sleeps from about late October to the end of March. We used to pack him into a box but we now bring him in when it gets cold - he free ranges in our garden and then he slows down and chooses where he sleeps for the winter. One year he slept under the dog's beanbag. Poor dog had a very uncomfortable winter with a huge lump in her bed
Daphne
Thats really interesting - the last time I heard anything about tortoises was that blessed Freda/Fred having his/her name painted on, on Blue Peter; and then later realising how expensive they were. Its really nice to think of a load of Kevin's having cared for long lives. Is there a tortoise forum somewhere?

chick wiggle
Awwww, Morning Kevin *waves* Childhood memories been awoken here, we had a tortoise called Jack. I loved him to bits. We had a budgie too and it would often have a ride on Jacks back.
Chucky Mama
When he is indoors he often comes to find me and sits on my feet. He once got in my sack of mail just about to go out to the post office and nearly got posted - without a stamp He went missing at the end of the summer when he was shut in and we thought he may have succeeded in posting himself. I had to phone the sorting office to get them to check for an escaped tortoise We found that he had got out of the back door (down a big step ) and buried himself in the garden. Daphne
Is he going through his mid-life crisis? Can't quite manage the open road on a bike so he thought he'd try the next best thing Can you imagine it if he had got through - you'd be on local radio at the very least! More adventures of Kevin when you're ready please
Chucky Mama
More adventures of Kevin when you're ready please When our dog Scally was a puppy she used to play flip the tortoise when no one was looking. We would look out into the garden to see poor Kev on this back with his legs in the air. Naughty Scally

He pretty much goes to sleep and wakes up within the same couple of days every year. What is it about footwear

Chucky Mama
He conspired with the chickens last year. He got them to dig a hole next to the fence and then he legged it. Thankfully the neighbours over the way found him and bought him back. Naughty Kevin Old enough to know better.
Plum
I've got tea up my nose reading this thread My 90+ year old patient has a tortoise that thinks its a cat it follows it around and sits in front of the fire with it. It has a very good selection of shoes and you don't sit still too long or it takes a fancy to your shoes
Chucky Mama
I must try and get a photo of him in the summer with his face stained red trying to make out he hasn't scoffed all of the carefully cultivated strawberries
