Maria's babies are here with pics

Recommended Posts

Maria Silkie is sitting on four little eggies and is due on Monday...I am SOOOO excited...considering taking the day of work :anxious:

I haven`t candled the eggs at all so they may not even be viable but she has been a great broody. She gets up in the morning to tend to her business and then sits tight for the rest of the day.

Fingers crossed some (hatch) and that Maria continues to be a good mum!

How exciting, glad she has lasted the stint

Mine gave up at day 8

oooh I won!!!

Raisin, my Orpidotte went broody at the same time as yours (i think) and she doesn`t seem to be very good at it. She is semi broody, sits on eggs for a few hours, gets up free ranges for a few hours, goes back to bed in the cube then the next day she is fighting tooth and nail to get back into the little broody ark

Today should be the day!

Maria got up to do her business and ate a bit of corn first thing this morning so I was able to look at the eggs....nothing pipped yet, no wrigglers and i couldn`t hear any cheeping but fingers crossed for chickies when i get home from work.

Raisins three eggs went back in the inncy but did not hatch :|

I got back from yours in about half an hour last week so not too long!

Just checked on her as i went round and dished out the cabbages and she is supper flat and still chirupping :)

Well we have one chick out and when I say out I mean thrown out of the nest.

Maria has hatched a little cuckoo pekin but doesn`t seem to like it. I have just popped outside and found it at the doorway to the ark. I have tried putting the chick back underneath her but she expertly wiggles little chicky out from underneath herself and then picks it up in her beak and flings it out of the nest. :(

I have retrieved the chick and popped it into the inncy as it is still a little wet.

Looks like she will be going into the brooder (once I have rigged up a partition). So much for my plans of sneaking some extra chicks under Maria tonight

Three eggs still under Maria and two are pipping.

Maybe once the other eggs have hatched she'll be more attentive? I was worried about Nelly last night because she pecked her chick a couple of times, I've never seen Tiger do that. She seemed happy for it to be underneath her but pecked it if it wasn't. Number two hatched in the night. She abandoned egg three this morning, which I candled and it was dead, but now she's not fixated with sitting on eggs she's fine with her pair of chicks.

I have just rescued another pekin chick from the broody run  Maria just doesn`t seem to want to know once they are fluffy. Popped it in the brooder and it is snuggling with todays other arrivals :)

Here is a little pic of Scout, cuckoo pekin and rescue chick no 1
