whoops, need a hug

Recommended Posts

I work in an artwork and repro house, producing ranges of packaging for major supermarkets.

(Sorry if i use any terminology that confuses, I'm feeling a little low and just need to tell someone)

Just been told a job went to print, got put on shelf and everything, with the barcode from another job.

Guess who last worked on it? Yep, muggins here.

TEN THOUSAND POUNDS BILL!!!!!!!!!

We have a QC dept but as my brief was to add a recycling logo and not to change the barcode they didn't re-check the barcode or any other info on the job.

(I may have used another job for guidance to get stuff in the right place and accidently pasted it in)

Either way, i get 'the chat' from the boss and no-one else. Wonderful.

Hopefully the company is insured for stuff like this (It happened so many times at my last place they were no longer insured)

I think the fact it happened at an amend after it'd been to repro (And therefore technically already signed off by the client) is why we got stuck with the bill.

Whoops.

One of those days really, it'll be better in the morning after a good nights sleep I'm sure.

(I've developed an annoying 'worrying habit' though, a traight i think i've inherited from my mum, sigh, lately i worry over the smallest things)

I was working on a large project once, and was talking to the senior project director.

He said he used to get really stressed - as projects running over time etc can cost an awful lot of money. And then one time, he realised that what is the worst that can happen if a project is late? No one is going to die. The world won't end. It's not like a decision in the battle field. And after that - he stopped stressing so much - and actually became more productive!

I can't say I don't stress about work and making mistakes - but it does help reminding myself that no-one will die as a result!

(You will be glad to know I am not a doctor/nurse/surgeon...)

How annoying. When things like this happen, my question to myself is 'so, when I'm 90  and sitting in my rocking chair reflecting on life, is this going to stand out as a major event?' The answer is usually 'no'! It's upsetting but you (and the boss) will get over it.

Sending Hugs. It is so easy for a mistake to be made. What is annoying is that people are always looking to blame an individual, rather than the system. A correctly-designed system will mean that it is expected that people will make mistakes, so appropriate checking is put in place to reduce the risk of a mistake getting through.

If the system your company has in place doesn't require the last person who looks at a job to inspect and correct for any errors, then it isn't your fault!

Oh dear, try not to worry about it overnight. Mistakes can happen so easily.

I lost £1 million pounds when I worked for a foreign bank, I'd only been there a couple of weeks and it was a checking thing that I'd never done before. I'm happy to say they did find it in the system somewhere but suffice to say I didn't have that job for long :shock::lol:

hey - its only ten grand (say it quick it doesnt sound much)

no one was injured (and it wasnt one million - seagazer 8) )

get your self armed for "the chat" - go in saying that you only worked on one part of it - and NOT the problem part (fingers crossed) and that it was checked and approved BEFORE you got to it - therefore - why is it your fault - you were only working on one part of it.

(((((((mega hugs)))))))

cathy

I'm with A chickychickychick-ENN!! Create a system for preventing that problem from arising again and show him what you are made of.

What ever you do, don't doubt your own ability or let this issue affect your feelings of self worth. women are really bad at doing that, and I notice that you say you have developed a worrying habit - that is a particularly female trait. I am reading a book at the moment by a psychologist called '" Women who think too much" all about the habit we have about playing events over and over in our minds and beating ourselves up about it. Basically the answer is to use distraction techniques to stop yourself doing this. Whatever happens, it is over and done with now, so pour yourself a large glass of wine, put your feet up and FORGET ABOUT IT!

And that's an Omlet order!

Brilliant advice from ChickenNutter - no-one can be perfect all of the time, not even me! I'm sure it feels horrible but start to compare with all the positive stuff that you have been involved with- drop in the ocean I bet!!

You can have a big hug from me. A friend and colleague gave me a big hug when as a pharmacy dispenser I gave the wrong medicine out to an epileptic person and they had a fit and a hospital visit as a result. They were fine afterwards and the pharmacist should have rechecked what I had done, but i still feel bad about that now. It was just before I left the job to have my ED. I had done the job for 7 years without incident, we are all human and anything but life is replacable.

The next day at work was much better.

I now write down everything I've done to a job and if there's a possibility of something being copied over from another job, so the QC dept are aware of any potential nasty surprises.

Thanks guys.

Sorry, i was just feeling a bit low and you've all managed to perk me up.
