Christian
I planted some peas under cloches about 2 weeks ago and covered the soil with holly to stop the mice. Just been out and not 1 pea is left! They have also eaten 7 onion sets, which i only planted a few days ago Any ideas?

Guest
....or a cat. I could rent you out Tigger for a week......!
Christian
Thats what OH said! I heard something about sprinkling chilli powder over the pea seeds, might give it a try. Also soaking them in parrafin before planting, but not too keen on that idea.
Christian
I could rent you out Tigger for a week......! Thanks Chookie! Next door have 5 cats but they are confined to their garden by a freedom fence thingymajigg(?). When they get close to the fence their collar starts beeping and then gives them a little shock . I guess thats why we have all the mice at ours
Egluntyne
According to a book I have, mice are repelled by the fresh or dried leaves of mint. Perhaps you could sprinkle some around the young plants and see what happens.
Martin B
That's interesting, never knew that!
Christian
Thanks Egluntine, will give that a try too! (when the garden is no longer a swamp).
snowcloud
I had a similar problem with mice taking my runner or broad beans from the garden before they had time to sprout and grow. I have a mainly cat free garden so I used some mouse traps rather than poison. (I heard the mint trick too, but it did not work for me). The traps I bought at a local hardware shop, were cheap, plastic and easy to set up. Then the NEXT DAY I had a mouse in each trap ... I did this for a couple of weeks, by which time they had either learnt to stay away from the traps, or had all been caught. I put them back out each year, usually catch one or two in the spring, then get no more problems ... worth a try if you don't mind getting rid of the dead mice ! Good luck... Christian
Thanks Snowcloud! I've decided to start them off indoors as too squeamish to empty mouse traps!
theherd123
I've decided to start them off indoors ... Having just seen a friend of mine who owns an allotment she suggested just what you are doing! Good plan Christian!
Christian
Out of 30 peas, 2 have germinated and 28 have rotted! Oh well, won't give up on birds eye just yet!
Chickpea
Only two of my Mange Touts have germinated so far - must be a bad year! (I've just sown a few more so fingers crossed!)
theherd123
Christian dont give up! I have put some damp kitchen roll in the bottom of a clear plastic tub and placed my peas, sugar snaps and french beans on it to germinate they are currently sat on my kitchen window sill. I have used this technique with my sweetpeas and it worked a treat - i now have 30 germinated seeds that im going to plant today!
Lesley
Don't worry - it's still quite early, you've plenty of time. I haven't done anything yet............. I haven't got the polytunnel this year and haven't ordered the greenhouse yet, so I'm waiting a while and will probably plant direct into the soil. By the time I get round to doing it, I'm hoping the mice will be finding plenty of food elsewhere.
Snowy
I planted some and the chickens dug them up and ate them! Won't make that mistake again!
