Coucou
My 13 year old son is devasted because he found one of his chickens dead in the nest box this morning. Spice, a year old Speckedly, was completely fine yesterday. My son has checked over the other three and they seem fine (each had laid an egg in the nextbox with their dead sister this morning). We were planning on disinfecting the nestbox, but we were wondering if there was anything else we should be doing?
SusieB123
I can't give you any advice as I am a complete novice - but just wanted to say how sorry I am to read your post - very sad
Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it. I had a similar experience a few weeks ago. I can only assume it was connected to laying, a heart attack, or internal rupture of some sort. There is nothing you could have done differently to prevent it. Disinfecting the coop is a wise precaution, in the face of the unknown. I hope your son is OK.

Coucou
Thank you for your quick responses and kind words. My ChickenChaser is outside right now cleaning the nest box. He feels everything so deeply at the best of times, I feel quite sorry for him. The chickens have always been his pets/responsiblity and he knew that chichens die, but this was so unexpected. I think keeping busy doing useful things for his remaining flock is the best thing for him just now.

Suzeb
Really sorry to hear about your chicken. Thought I would share my recent experience. Two days ago we found our Bluebelle dead in the nesting box too. COmplete shock as she was absolutely fine first thing - looking healthy and eating okay. Was only a year old. Checked Thomasina over and nothing obviously wrong with her. Have done the same as you and disinfected everywhere. I am hoping it is just heart failure but keeping a close eye on the other chickens. Have also wormed the others just in case. WOuld be interested to hear if anyone has any suggestions. Suze
Plum
I'm so sorry , I lost one in the same way a couple of weeks ago. There didn't seem to be any reason and I'll never know why. Sensible to have a clean up. I also wormed and deloused others even though there was no evidence, I just felt I was doing something.

ISCA
Sorry to hear that. It's never easy loosing a pet/friend and the unexpectedness of it componds things. It sounds like you are good support for him though, keeping him busy etc. It never gets easier though !

Chucky Mama
What a shame, finding a dead animal is just the worst thing. It is such a shock, I really feel for your son. With no prior symptoms it could have been heart related or an internal bleed. Impossible to tell but unlikely to be something that will be a problem for the rest of your girls. Coucou
Thanks for your support. The ChickenChaser has had a pretty sad day, but lots of hugs. I think reading about others' experiences was a comfort to him, so thanks for sharing. I was relieved to see that no one has suggested we should be worried about our other birds. chickyhazel
I don't think it's likely more than one will have this happen to them, I think it's pretty rare.

Sarahsausage
Aah sorry to hear about one of your girls, it's always sad to lose them. The only comfort is that she hopefully went peacefully in her sleep and didn't have to suffer an illness as so many do.

cluckingmad
Just read this - what a horrible shock for your son, poor lamb. Well, you can tell him from me that the love he shows for his hens says a lot about what a kind, loving person he is. And give hin a hug from me!
