Scrabble is missing!

Recommended Posts

I am absolutely besides myself - as this afternoon when I went to let the silkies & the 2 pekins that live with them out to free range - there was no Scrabble. I feel so dumb as I didn't really check this morning when I opened their eglu door. I was rather half asleep & just see a flurry of chickens come flying out the eglu door.

Hubby shut them in last night - they had been free ranging & he shut the run door then the eglu door without counting them all. I hate to make him feel bad, but it looks like Scrabble may have bee shut out all night, or even wandered out the garden during her daylight free range afternoon. Never been known before & we do sometimes pop out & leave them to it. However, we are convinced that on our return at about 5.30pm Friday, she & her sister Tiddlywinks were running towards the gate & I remember me & my mum laughing at them both. So it seems she wandered off afterwards or did get shut out last night. There is literally no sign of her & no evidence of feathers that something may have carried her off. I have cried myself silly I feel so stupid. Poor hubby daren't even think about what he might have done, I don't want him to feel worse than he already feels. I just want my little Scrabble pekin back! We have walked around the block looking & down the alley way - nothing. Where is she? She was so adorable & little & hasn't long been laying. I hatched her from some of Buttons eggs.:cry::cry:

I feel terrible.

I've even stripped the eglus & washed, poultry shielded & powdered & didn't notice she wasn't in the run.

I have an eglu visit tomorrow & my eyes are going to be like golf balls!

I really really pray she comes home. They may be chickens, but I love every one of them so very much!

Custard my Pekin frightened me last weekend because she disappeared too. Between the fence at the end of my garden and the neighbours fence in the garden opposite there is a tiny gap and I knew a couple of girls had been squeezing through a hole to lay there. I eventually found Custard wedged in broody on 23 eggs  She hadn't made a sound and if I hadn't guessed where she was she'd still be there now and I'd still be thinking she was missing. I've had to wreck another bit of the fence to get her out! I really hope Scrabble is broody and hiding somewhere like Custard did

There is just no sign of her! Yes we have looked under bushes & behind fences etc. We will ask our neighbour once she is up to check her shed & garage & we will be going on a few walks again today. I just want to see her waddling about in our garden. She hasn't been laying long & showed no signs of any broodiness - she is too nosey for that & prefers to be rooting tooting about the garden.

Her sister ' Tiddlywinks' is all down & depressed & won't come out the eglu today. She isn't broody & not in the nest, just very very upset obviously.:cry:

I have some local people coming to see the eglus today & I'm going to find it hard to be jolly & talk about chickens etc. My head is booming & I feel lousy - Where is my poor little chicken?

Sad news I'm afraid. We have just been brushing the decking & were sat out in the sun, when I noticed a plant pot upside down. I said to hubby have you checked under there. I don't know what made me say it. But hubby lifted the plastic pot & there she was, head tucked in dead. She could have been alive last night & died of heat exhaustion & no water.

So a warning to others - stack your empty plant pots or put them away - a bantam can obviously die underneath one. At least we can bury her now & know that a fox didn't get her, but it's our own stupid fault.
