Woodcat
I'm having an issue with one of my pekins. She's gone broody and this would be fine but she is sitting and brooding anywhere. I shut her out of the house and she brooded (sat puffed up screaming collecting anything that is remotely egg like) In the middle of the lawn. She is quite literally willing to sit and brood anywhere. I popped her in my rat cage upside down on bricks which normally works well as a broody cage and she just collected her food bowl and sat brooding that. I tried putting the roosting bars in so she couldn't push stuff under her and she just sat on the bars puffed up screaming in that typical pancake like broody position. Even if i put food directly in front of her she won't eat it till i've got her up and made her walk round. She's always been a little girl and she is getting very very thin and i'm really worried about her. She has been eating more over the last couple of day but only because i'm forcing her to walk around and eat which i can't keep doing because i'm not always here. I'm really at my wits end with this because nothing seems to be working. Any suggestions? I'm very reluctant to go with cold baths because she's just getting over a cold (isn't helping with her weight) and i don't want her to get ill again. How long could this go on for? Will she eventually snap out of it herself? I think i have to take the prize on the silliest broody chicken ever.
Lewis
Maybe try hanging the rat cage up - have you got a coop cup to hang the food up so she can't drag it under her? It should take about 3 days for her to snap out of it, so just be persistant. Soak some mixed corn or wheat in water for 6+ hours and feed her that - mine wolf it down, and it gets water in them too
Mollie333
I have the same problem. And shes a pekin. She broods outside the coop..
Ain't Nobody Here
Could you take the roosting bars out? Depends on the type of cage, but I put mine in a puppy cage just with the wire for a floor (it needs to be uncomfortable ).
Egluntyne
Same here. Food and water in cage cups, too, so that there is nothing for them to sit on. Raise the cage up on bricks so that the cooling breezes waft through her petticoats and it should do the trick. My Pekins are relentlessly broody. There is usually one or another of them in the cage. That's what we did yesterday with Florence , just her and 2 galley cups - she isn't happy , chunnering away and squawking when I go near.........DS (16) thinks I'm mean because I'm taking away her right to be a mummy! Woodcat
Its an upside down rat cage with a wire floor up on bricks and she just sits on the wire and broods with anything she can reach under her i just went down and found her brooding a twig. I tried the bars so she'd have to perch and she perches and broods. Where the cage is concerned i don't think being persistent is working simply because it's actually sending her more broody because all she does is sit. coco
Are you sure she not coming out to eat when you aren't there. My silkie cross Coco has been broody since about March /April its been so long I've lost track now. The kids and neighbours have both heard her shouting her little head off during the day and she doesn't appear to have lost much weight. I've tried everything with her [apart fromdunking] but she just persists. She seems happy and healthy so I've given up and shall leave her to it. She was even doing her pancake inpression on the soil last night. She does like corn at the moment though.
