Snoxy
Hi I have been reading about Warren type hybrids and Amber Link/Amber Star hybrids...they both seem to lay 300 plus eggs per year...just wondering which one generally lays the largest brown eggs. Thank you Lou
Egluntyne
My Amber Link laid average sized pale beige eggs. A Speckledy will lay you a nice brown egg.
Snoxy
Thank you...my Speckledy, Clara lays a dark brown speckled egg...never bigger than 49gms...although for weeks and weeks they weighed 44gms every day I would like a couple of large brown egg layers...although I really shouldn't get anymore...but I am becoming broody again
AmberSky
For a darker brown egg maybe something crossed with maran, maybe a bluebelle hen. I have one and she does lay darker brown eggs than normal. As for size i think its the age of the hen that determines the size of egg rather than much else. Although i am a complete novice so dont mind being corrected! susanb
our Bovans Goldline laid lovely brown eggs - 66 -70g, every day. A fox got her and our new goldline is laying similarly nice brown eggs (not so big yet). We also have a Black Star who lays a nice brown egg. Snoxy
Thank you...I have a Bluebelle...she started laying brown eggs but they have become lighter and lighter and are now almost cream I was thinking along the lines of Bovans Goldline...are they the same as a Warren...I think I am confused
AmberSky
i have goldlines and i think yes vertually the same as warrens. I did think of getting a maran because i wanted some dark brown eggs, but i read somewhere that they do not have nice characters and can be aggressive. Snoxy
I have a beautiful Maran Cuivree...Lulu...she has only laid me a wind egg so far (around 3 weeks ago) ...it looks just like a Malteser...she is around 27 weeks old...no sign of the lovely dark brown eggs I was told she should lay...ho-hum hope I haven't got another non-productive hen She is a lovely hen and doesn't mind being picked up
Redwing
Have you considered a pure breed or a cross breed? Something with French Marans blood in should lay a dark egg A Welsummer or Welsummer cross will lay a flowerpot coloured egg If you are set on a hybrid perhaps try to see if you can get your hands on a Black Rock, they usually lay an egg darker than normal
susanb
if it helps......our first goldline was a lovely character - very interested in everything that was going on and always one for a cuddle. The new goldline is very similar - easily the most tame and always comes up to us for a stroke/cuddle. We have already said that we would get goldlines again and would recommend them to anyone. (our bluebelle is a a very flighty girl and lays a cream coloured egg.) Our Black Star is similar to a Black Rock (I think.....smaller?). She does lay a brown egg. migsy
My Black Rock lays a darkish brown egg. Quite a nice colour actually. She is friendly but not cuddly.
lillybettybabs
I have a Warren, She is the most loving Chicken and lays very large brown egg.
Tiggy
I have warrenns & the eggs vary in size and colour, from white to dark brown, it seems to depend on what they've been eating/how much grit they've picked up, and yes the eggs have gotten bigger as they got older
Snoxy
Thank you everyone for your fab replies...very much appreciated
Roobaloo
How dark do you want them? Toph (magpie) lays a "standard" beige egg, Suki is an Amber of some sort (the breeder called her a silver nick but she looks like an Amber link to me!!) and she lays a slightly darker egg but not a deep/dark brown like a Maran...it's beautifully smooth and ever so slightly speckled!! Lavenders_Blue
My ex batts (Warrens) lay 65+g eggs Standared 'supermarket egg' colour.
Snoxy
Size rather than the shade of brown is more important for me personally at the moment
jennydavies
Our Black Rock, Nugget laid very dark brown eggs, not huge but lovely colour.
chicken bark
My Gold Star lays brown eggs that must way around 65-70g on average. My Amber Star lays lighter brown ones that weigh something similar. My Black Star is a cheeky bag as she has never laid. Tut!

batcatz
My columbian blacktail lays very large light brown eggs. Largest so far is 78g. She lays an egg everyday and has a lovely inquisitive and friendly nature. Waitrose use this breed for their freerange eggs. Highly recommended!
