Should I ask for refund from chemist?

Recommended Posts

I'm 6 weeks post op following my hysterectomy, and had part of the wound open up after I left hospital (actually I was discharged with part of the wound open and because I didn't know I managed to open it a bit further  ). I have been dressing/packing it myself with dressings supplied by GP surgery nurse (who was so short of time and staff she couldn't do more than 1 appointment) and a box of dressings I bought in a pound shop.

I've been back to the GP yesterday and the wound now requires smaller dry dressings, changed twice daily at the least. The nurse again kindly gave me a half full iodine spray and a dressing for the first change, and a prescription for 10 days worth of dressings. I went to the chemist yesterday and they didn't have any dressings in but told me to come back today, late, when the courier will have delivered the stock. Just been down to the chemists and the courier has not delivered  . I am using plaster strip that you cut to size to dress the wound, and it seems to suffice, it's just not ideal and feel like asking for my money back first thing tomorrow morning. Can I do this? They have already scribbled on the prescription that I have paid, and I could do a lot with the £7.20, plus by tomorrow I will have changed the dressing 3 times and the prescription was for 10 days.

Would you ask for the money back and use the plaster? Or should I have the proper dressings? Can I get my money back??

I'd ask them to ring round the local late night chemists to find one that has the dressings then refund you and send you there with your prescription, its more hassle for you but using plaster strips on a surgical wound isnt good enough

or see if they sell Menolin (not sure if I've spelled that right) patches and micropore tape and use that

I don't know about the asking for your money back bit, but I would say be careful about plasters, especially if you use them on the same area for a time. I had a weeping sore on my leg after an op to fix my broken ankle - turns out it was infected and I had to have another op, but thats another story - so I was usuing the plasters you cut to size to stop the ooze :vom: dripping down my leg :vom::vom::vom: and I developed a rash where the adhesive was. I was only using them for about a week, maybe two at max, so it wasn't a long time. Just thought I'd warn you, as its very itchy and you really don't want that plus the open wound. Good luck with the refund!

Unfortunately the chemist is now closed (I went down just before closing time). I should explain that the wound has virtually healed, it is now just missing the top layer of skin about 1 cm by half a cm, so it's like a small bad graze.

Pity I don't have any dressing as I have a roll of micropore, I was using that to stick the seaweed packing on when I ran out of dressings two weeks ago!

Bluekarin, thanks, I've had some sort of dressing stuck over this for over three weeks now and the skin is a bit crinkly underneath. Thankfully the area is numb so I can't feel it :D

I would buy some gauze (over the counter is cheaper - click - and use the micropore. Try and put the micropore in a different place each time though as it can start to irritate. Shame you don't live closer as I have a load left over from Nias latest op.

And go and get your money back.

Thanks Bron, I'm off to the chemist when they open at 9.30, for a refund. I found some really large dressings I bought from a pound shop so have been cutting those into three and sticking them on. I can get some more in a day or so, but the link for Boots is interesting. I have to pop to work today for a meeting and there's a Boots opposite. I might go over and ask for a pack of the gauze, it's a good price :D .

oh claire, no advice but just wanted to wish you a speedy recovery, you really don't need to be messed around like this when you're not well! xxxxxxx

Thanks folks for your concern and wishes :D Apart from the unhealed bit I'm absolutely fine and dandy, and it is just like a little s"Ooops, word censored!"e now. No pain or other residual problems (apart from not being able to reach my feet comfortably, and not having much stamina) other than what was to be expected after major surgery. I'm registered with a forum for chatting about these things and some ladies are lamenting the loss of their wombs, I've had to stop myself from telling them to get a grip

I'm signed off until 8th August at present and quite honestly am not sure how I will fit work in again. I'm so busy at home :D

Sounds like one that i looked at back then

The stupidest question I was every asked was 'do you feel less like a woman?' *tuts* I expect that you've heard it too. Glad to hear that you are keeping busy and making the most of your time off. Don't forget to rest though; it's the anaesthetic that takes it out of you. The bloated tum will go in time :)

I'm not a 'rester' either Claire but I over did it in a big way one day and had to lie down with a pillow under my bum for a bit  I felt really bad, but then I'd stupidly been heaving Eglus about

I had a bit of a jelly belly for about 10 days afterwards and it felt more comfy with some control pants to stop it wobbling around. It soon went down though, with all the Arnica I was taking.
