Favourite Hens

Recommended Posts

They are all special but I probably do have a bit of a soft spot for James :D she is bottom of the pecking order so I feel sorry for her I suppose although she is also a very beautiful Maran cuckoo. (speckled). She is also the most trouble of the lot - smallest eggs, last one to start laying, broody twice already this year - actually I am going off her as I type!!!!!!! :D:D:D

I can only comment on the girls I have owned - one year tomorrow.

I love Black Rocks - independant and very intelligent. I love 'ginger' girls - I find them one egg short of a clutch and daft as brushes. I am not a lover of the Amber white ladies - I found they have permanent PMT.

But really - any old chook will do - they are just the best pets ever. No one ever asks how your dog/cat/rabbit/goldfish is - but EVERYONE asks how my girls are.

My favourite our my light sussex bantams they were there for me through a hard time at home and would just sit enxt to me while FR and listen to me :)

Pure breed because they are useful longer. And sometimes look much better. (sometimes)

I love my Polands. They keep me entertained because they're so dim and they love cuddles. They're hard work though, they need to be kept dry and hate the cold. I wanted to add one or two more Poland hens so that Olive & Doris had company in their winter quarters so recently hatched some more Polands, two silver laced that'll no doubt take forever to sex but Doris & Olive are guaranteed a new friend in Dilys, a cuckoo Poland who is most definitely a girl :D Her cuckoo barring makes her easy to sex

For looks I love Wyandottes best, the variety of colour and feathers are wonderful.

My favourite hen and don't tell the others is Pigeon, a gingernut. She's bossy, greedy, disruptive at times, lays soft and broken eggs and makes a racket but she loves me and sits on my lap for a sleep and has a wonderful gentle cluck. I just can't help loving her. :D

I love my pekins the most! Shhh. That includes the mighty Spongebob & Bingo the cockerels.

I'm also very fond of the black rocks & Cassandra the houdini gold legbar.

Not forgetting big big Boon, my partridge cochin cockerel.

Hard to choose a favourite out of them all - but I'd say Tiddlywinks, the black frizzle pekin girl, as she is soooo loveable & cute.

I have several favourites :D My Light Sussex is lovely to look at, a reliable layer and has a lovely temperament, ditto my Australorp ( not quite so many eggs) and Muppet my Silkie is everyones favourite, so comical and a brilliant broody and mum ( her 'babies' are 12 weeks old now, and she's still mothering them !! )

Ginger one of my original two Omlet hens. One died in April but Ginger now three years old, lays every day to keep up with the three new ones. I pretend I love them all but Ginger is the nicest and never pecked me unlike the new ones who were attack trained I think for the first few weeks. All fine now thank goodness.

Chicken Tikka is currently winning the battle for hearts and minds in this household. She's calm and collected. So glad we chose Light Sussex Bantams. :)

Chicken Bhuna on the other hand is like a bull in a china shop - crashing in everwhere, chirping with joy when she wins a treat, and then running around everywhere like a.... a .... no I won't say it.

My love is martha the millfleur and also my pekins as they have no issue with being handled,

I do however have a chiken that i rather dislike, my dutch, we basically have an understanding that we dont like each other, i wish i had called her the same name as my Mother in Law!
