Your Opinion- The Best Thing About Keeping Chickens?

Recommended Posts

Home laid eggs !egg!!egg! are amazing but also the way they run randomly around the garden chasing a fly or a moth makes me laugh every time and the way they choose their spot for a sandbath regardless of the fact that you've just planted some lovely flowers there!!!:D

Weeding in the garden today, and whispering and gesturing to Roxy to come over to me on her own, so I could point out a worm I found for her (as she's slower than the others picking things up after losing the top half of her beak), and she actually came over and managed to get it, bless her!

My favourite thing is to sit on my chair outside and for Robin to come running over and jumping on my lap for a cuddle and having Egeltine perched on the back of my chair and Olive on my shoulder. I get covered in mud, poked and prodded but I love my chookie cuddles and my girls love me.

I think it's definitely the comedy. The constant charging around when they see a fly/seed/piece of grass. The jumping for treats. The hooting. The fuss when the neighbour's cat is unlucky/brave enough to walk past.

I love cuddling the chickens, and the eggs are a nice bonus, but I could literally watch their daft behaviour all day long and not get bored.

I think Bertie has summed it up all very nicely. But I do need to add the site of three feathery bums in the air and watching them dust bathe.

My current favourite is Madge making a quiter version of her 'I'm here' noise from the nest box if she hears I am out to say '"Hello". As if I'd forget her.

How they are so calming when you need it and when they just sit near you and listen.

The eggs are nice (not a very big fan).

How they are funny and just come charging from what ever they are doing :)

Can I add that I just love it (not) when one or more manages to escape when i am doing the morning check and the WIR door is opened so that I can change the water. :wall::wall::wall:

No amount of dexterity on my part with a strategically positioned 'shield' will stop Cissie if she's in escape mode.

I am shattered now. :notalk:

I love it when they do the 50 yard sprint from the run to the bird table to see what the birds have dropped.....not very gainly!! But they are also very sedate as they work their way round the garden and I find it very therapeutic to watch....plus Ginger burbles gently away at me when I'm near as if she's talking to me..... Plus of course, the eggs....shop ones are never the same! :D

It's nice to see that we all have similar reasons. I agree with everything above - my favourite thing is the comedy of them chasing each other & flies around the garden. My husband & I sat outside on a blanket when we first introduced the new and old girls - we were there for hours and I only read my book for part of the time as the chickens are so lovely to watch.

I also love the way that one of the new girls - our Bluebelle, Lavender - is really chatty. She has a soft whoop-whoop noise which she greets us with. Lovely. I'm so glad I started to keep chickens.
