Sony or ipod mp3 player?

Recommended Posts

I know there has been a lot written on here about the ipods in the past, but I am reluctant to pay out for one when all I want is a good but relatively basic music player. I like the look of the Sonys - does anyone have one, and can you tell me if you can use them on the ipod docking stations? I really want to get one for OH for his birthday - he only wants music and won't use it for anything else. Thanks :D

I've had Sony Walkman phones for the last 4/5 years, and always been really pleased with them, easy to upload music etc. Only problem is their seeming obsession with committing suicide by loo.....I've lost 2 this way....I'm not a handbag sort of a girl, so phone etc goes in pockets. bad move.

The main stereo in the lounge will soon be in need of replacing and I liked the idea of replacing it with a docking station so we could each add our own MP3s and play our own music. Then over time, I could add one to the kitchen, dining room, bedroom etc :D But I can only do that with an ipod can I?

I've seen the ipod classics used like this, can the nanos and shuffles also be used with the docking stations?

We are in a similar position, the stereo is old but I am not sure what to replace it with, I thought a docking thing and then I would need to get an mp3. Not sure how much this would all cost. Can anyone give me a rough idea of cost for an mp3 and docking thing plus anything esle I would need to play the music out loud

Thanks

Because we have very different tastes and would like to be able to play it wherever we are - at home (in any room), camping, at work etc. We do have a little stereo that takes a memory card, but it means creating a new card with playlists on just for that stereo. I already use my phone with a short playlist on it and love the portability of it - has built in mini speakers so I don't need headphones and can listen whilst at work. The Sony I was looking at also has built in speakers. I know that will never give a very good sound quality, but for some situations it is adequate.

Thanks for all the advice - problem solved. Sister in law just rang and asked if OH wanted an ipod touch for his birthday. Well you don't look a gift horse in the mouth do you? So I will treat him to a docking station. Can you only use them with itunes? :? Now I'm stuck - do I go ahead and buy myself the Sony as planned, or carry on with the ipod theme? decisions decisions

I'd get an iPod for yourself so you can use it with the dock - with the new ipods out, see if you can get a bargain in the sales :D

I don't think itunes is a pain at all - really like it.

Might aswell give it a try + see if you get on with it, before trying to avoid it from the start

I like my ipod nano Snowy, I think the sound quality is really good too. It's an 8gb but I seriously haven't filled half of it. I have just upgraded my phone to an iphone though and will listen to my music on there rather than carry a mobile and an ipod around so I think I will be ebay the nano when I can get around to it, especially coming up to Christmas it should sell I guess so you may find people are doing the same and you would get a bargain on there....

I also have no idea how to find out which generation it is.. although it isn't that old so Lewis how would I find that out  .

Both my boys have the ipod touch's and love them, it has been the best present we ever got them, they use them all the time, although now they wont leave my iphone alone... *evil glare at children*

edited to add that I have no trouble with itunes and have it set up so that both boys and me share apps and music etc... it's very cool I think. .. but I am easily pleased..

Well hubby was presented with the ipod last night (a 32Gb touch  - very generous SIL), and wouldn't let any of us touch it, although we all wanted a play!:lol: Had a tutorial this morning from BIL and a demo of his Bose dock and headphones  Fabulous but I think we will need to save up for that one :?

Am in the process of downloading itunes - very exciting (at least I get to play with it now as hubby is a technophobe). I will get him set up then start planning my own

Thanks for all the advice :D

Hi Snowy,

It's worth checking out the Argos clearance bargains place in Corby when you're over in that direction, they often have Ipods in, Thursdays is the day the new electrical stuff comes in. I got my 32GB Ipod touch from there and it was about £100 cheaper than the store price, they were just overstock items, it was all sealed and new and the latest generation when I bought it. Last time I was in they had lots of Nanos in various colours (although that was a while ago!!)
