Puffin
I wondered if anyone else has suffered like this - I have lost four "chicks" - although all POL now - three cream legbars and a marans in just over a week. The marans died today and on advice from a friend (who is a vet) took it for a post mortem. Acute pneumonia was the verdict. I have one lone cream legbar (lola) left who I am really concerned about -she seems perky enough but is all on her own. The big girls seem fine - but I really can't face any more deaths. I am treating Lola with Baytril as a precaution. My five year old son was devastated tonight when he heard his last chick had died. (Lola is my 4yr old daughters). I dread going out to the chickens at the moment... not sure what I will do if anymore die... Sorry not very cheerful, but its been a bit traumatic. Egluntyne
Sorry to hear it. It sounds as if they have been affected by the same virus/bacterial infection.
MarkBevBen
Oh you poor thing Puffin, no wonder you're so sad. We lost our Lottie to a bacterial infection and we were devastated Here's hoping Lola will get stronger each day and pull through xxx
Sue
Just wondered if perhaps they got very wet through and went to bed wet one evening and maybe sleeping in a draught? I have never had this happen, but I keep Marans which are big birds, and were bred for damp marshy conditions, but even then I don't like to see them wet through, and if it was raining heavy in the morning would probably keep them in their covered run I imagine pneumonia is contagious once one had got it. I would try maybe giving them a warm mash with perhaps some codliver oil on, and keep them dry and out of draughts with plenty of straw to rootle in So so sorry - I hate loosing anything ever. Happy chickens!
That's so sad, poor you and your family. I hope that the illness has run its course now and the others will be ok. x

Puffin
Well they all seem quite chirpy this morning - although Lola seems a bit lost without her friends and follows me around... have just spent ten minutes sitting watching them trying to spot any signs of illness but they all seem ok...
