Charlottechicken
Oh heck! Another winter like last year I'll buy another couple of cheap bags of salt I think. I always carry a kilo of salt in the car with me now, whenever there is ice/snow forecast. (I always take it out too, don't want to get a rusty car!) Redwing
I've driven on studded tyres in Finland and they work very well I was surpised to learn though that they arent allowed in some countries such as Canada as they damage the road, even snow chains arent usually used in Canada - they simply rely on chunky winter tyres which go on in October and stay on all winter - it costs about $100 to get them swapped over Ohhh the things I have learned working with a Canadian These last two winters I have kept a shovel in the car- that has served me well as I have one of the naff rear wheel drive cars that Claret alluded to earlier
Omletina Kyckling
Studded tyres aren't allowed in this country either due to damanging the roads. In Sweden, it is a legal requirement to change to winter tyres from, I think, November to March each year. People either use studded tyres or tyres made from a different rubber compound. You can buy this type in this country. In my previous life, I had sets of winter and summer tyres for my quattro, and the winter ones were very good indeed. Christian
Yep, same in germany Omletina. Winter tyres are law from the 1st November. OH has a 'naff' rear wheel drive BMW, that is more than useless in the snow. He loves it though and can drive properly Am looking into getting him snow socks for Christmas. Logs were delivered last night and most are now stacked The last few to stack by the house today. Bring on the snow!
Happy chickens!
At least the councils know they are unprepared this year!!! Someone was talking about grit supplies being low already on breakfast news the other day. If nature is anything to go by, the squirrels in the garden are burying a phenomal amount of conkers this year - the lawn is much more covered than usual by opened horse chestnut shells. I'd rather really cold than loads of damp dreary days.
mostin
I am sat looking out of my window at my holly tree, and I have never seen it so loaded with berries, and so early too . Also, my chooks are all going through really heavy moults very early too, do they know something we don't? I have changed from my sports convertible to a Landrover this summer as we are on top of a very steep hill, so fingers crossed. Hubby does a lot of work over in Denmark and they all change over to winter tyres. If you have an accident and they find you are still driving on your summer tyres then you are not insured . They all have 2 sets which usually come as standard when buying a car. I love the silence of snow too, it's great when you wake up and just know, before you even open the curtains, that the world has turned sparkley white over night . bluekarin
I love the silence snow brings as well, and the sounds of the kids playing outside Better buy some sledges as we missed out last year and its not the same with a gravel bag with a bath mat inside And better get the kids some Yaktrax for their jaunt to school! Those snowsocks look interesting Christian.

Mrs Webmuppet
Little Miss Webmuppet said this morning (she was looking over my shoulder while I was reading this thread)' if it's going to be as cold this winter as last winter then I want a full ski suit not just a winter anorak!' I would point out she does walk to and from school . I have been trawling the 'net in search of a cheapish ski anorak/ salopettes combo ( she has also grown out of her winter anorak).eBay seems to have some good deals. ali-s
I haven't noticed many berries on trees and shrubs this year. Very few on our Hawthorn and Elderberries, in fact the elderberries have only just started to ripen, does that mean Scotland will be having a tropical Winter I have bought a pair of Thinsulate thermal pair of trousers ready for winter walking, they are so cosy. Also a new 3 in 1 jacket so I should be warm and dry. My thermal undies have been freshly washed and are ready for wearing. OH bought me extra grippy tyres after I skidded off our lane and into a field last year. They took 4 weeks to arrive and were delivered the day after the ice melted. Still they have been very good in wet weather.
Lewis
Can't wait Spotted notices on the Seafront houses earlier saying not to go outside if there is a storm 'cos of being so close to the sea!! Its soo hilly here, will be horrible driving + walking, in the snow + ice. Think people had problems getting home last year, will be fine though We went toboganning at the farm last year on feed bags filled with straw
CatieB
It amazes me how we suffer with the weather. We got married in the Ice Hotel in Sweden and life goes on despite MEGA snow and weather. We landed on a snow bound airport, changed planes for a local one and the airport employees came and s"Ooops, word censored!"ed the snow off the plane before we took off again. The roads were barely visable yet continued to be used.

I think that I have stopped it snowing here again. I bought a sledge just as the thaw set in last winter so it will probably sit in the garage unused forever

CatieB
Wow did you stay there?I had one night there .............in the bar ........ahem hic hic Got through three ice glasses Don't remem ber much else Yes we stayed a week! Only one night in the actual ice hotel but it was minus 28 They do also have warm accomodation. As for the glasses.... Less than a month before the wedding date I found out I was pregnant and when you have a drink without alcohol in it promptly freezes Then impossible to drink despite shaking it vigourously upside down. Amazing place - did you see the ice rooms?
Old Speckled Hen
Yes I suppose it's the high alcohol that keeps everything liquid. You could get hot chocolate.....but in a cup of course. Friends were staying and we looked in their room. Reindeer skins over a block of ice and warmest sleeping bags ever on top. The sculptures dotted about were wonderful. Just amazing to think it's all built new every year. We watched them fashioning the "bricks". Did you know that ice is normally opaque because the lakes freeze slowly so they cut out a hole which then refills and freezes quickly so the ice is clearer Some daft people jumped into the ice cold water and the Japanese tourists were buying replica ice glasses (made of glass)
