Bunions

Recommended Posts

I think I've got one - stinging pain in foot - got a bunion plaster - not much help takes pressure off a bit. Doctor checking to make sure its not gout but I dont think it is. Not huge just painful and makes me wince. Anyone bin done surgery route or any relief found from other sources

My daughter had bunions and had surgery on them 3 years ago. Since then she has had nothing but trouble. She is still seeing the consultant and last week had to have an MRI scan on her feet as he thinks she may have nerve damage. Saying that it did help with the pressure on the side of her feet it's just the pain she has everywhere else in her feet now! If you are thinking of the surgery route I would speak to your GP and see if you can find anyone else who had it done. We just had a bad experience but you could have it done and everything would be fine

I have a huge bunion on one foot, which has been very little trouble. What you're experiencing now might be bursitis if it is caused by a bunion, which is an infection in the swollen sac of fluid around the joint. I've only had that twice in the sixteen years I've had this monster, and the rest of the time it's absolutely no bother (other than making sure I buy shoes that fit). I've always been told to avoid surgery on it if I can, and intend to do so. I don't do anything to it really, other than bathe it in witchhazel if I rub the skin on it (doesn't happen very often now as the skin is pretty tough).

When I had bursitis it was much more of an aching inflammed pain, not a stinging sensation. My whole foot ached and pressure on my bunion was unbearable. I can heartily recommend some birkenstocks (without toe posts) for the summer - I'm still wearing mine now most days and they're so comfy, and adjustable where it counts ;)

Bunions run in our family (no pun intended :lol: )

I had both feet operated on when I was 24 which was considered quite a young age but necessary.

The op was brutal, both feet done at the same time, bone removed from the outer part of my ig toe joint, the big toe broken and realigned. I was on crutches for 6 weeks.

However it was a complete success for me, nearly 20 years later and they're still ok. My feet are still wide but not as wide as they were. More importantly I can drive long distances in comfort and can spend all day on my feet which I couldn't before the op.

However...I have since learned that the op carried a 60% risk of leaving them worse than before

Have a look here (if you're not squeamish :vom: ) http://www.google.com/images?q=bunion+images&hl=en&prmd=iv&source=lnms&tbs=isch:1&ei=rZDBTISKHcjKjAfA07xX&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&ved=0CA8Q_AU&biw=1280&bih=909

This post is really helpful. I have a bunion but it doesn't hurt at the side of my foot where it sticks out, but the joint of my toe is leaving me in agony. I have a lot of standing around at trade shows in my job and often am in pain after the first hour :-(

I don't have bunions , but i do have inflammatory arthritis ,and i get pain in

my feet and toes..swelling too. I buy my shoes from widerfit as i wear a

width EEEE. It may be an arthritic pain, (and gout is a form of arthritis too.)

Just have to wait for the bloods to come back.

I have bunions, both on my big toe joints and on my little toe joints too (tailors bunions I think they are called). My big toe bunions are usually okay but I do get a bit of trouble from my tailors bunions. I find liberal application of ibuprofen gel can help and also I got some custom made orthotic insoles for my shoes which take the pressure off all the bits of my foot where there shouldn't be any pressure. These were from the podiatrist (NHS). Definitely worth asking for a podiatry appointment to see what can be done without surgery.
