becks
I think you should club together with other parents and send them all to school with huge wheely cases that will take up loads of room in the school and cause endless problems! perhaps then they'll reconsider! The Dogmother
Good luck Sarah - You've got me on a rant too! This has come at an age when children, especially girls are going to be prone to developing scoliosis (curvature of the spine). My friend's daughter was in a cast for 6 months as treatment for one. I go to a really good osteopath, and I am sure that he would be happy to supply some scientific material to back up your letters, just let me know... I remember having lockers, where we left our books between lessons, but we still had to lug a pretty hefty bag home full of homework, I am only 5'1" and was even tinier then, so it was real hard work, especially as we didn't have backpacks then. I will do all I can to help.
Cinnamon
Hi Clare, Anything you can come up with would be great. Thanks so much I have some info from the Backpain ass of Gb & the Oseopaths site, both of which I have forwarded to the school. They do have lockers at the chool, but the idea is that you take all your books to every lesson, so I don't see how they would help that much. Also, you cannot (as a pupil) choose where in the school your locker is, and they have been known to be broken in to Poor Devon was so weighed down this morning (she had hockey) that I had to DRIVE her to the bus stop! Sort of cancels out the benefits of a school bus, doesn't it And I am not a "fussy" mum.......so goodness knows what others are thinking. The problem with it being such a large School is that I know very few other parents there. The feeder primary school is small & in a very small village, so there are only really a handfull of us that know each other. Still - on we go
daisy duck
Right behind you on this one, my daughter had a 40 minuite walk with all her books ,she is of a slight build and it was way too much . We would give her lifts whenever possible but I think the schools forget in this day and age of the car, that somtimes these kids have long walks to school as well as draging them round all day. The Dogmother
Hi *Sarah* I will get in touch with Hector and see what he can come up with. Will let you know. She needs one of those small wheelie cases like cabin crew use!
Cinnamon
I have tried the wheelie tack, & she won't have anything to do with it unfortunatly. I think it would be ideal, but Devon being a conformist just wants what the other girls have. I can see her point in a way I had a letter from the head today & it was very perfunctory (I am sure all of us who have written in will get the same letter),stating all the benefits of taking a bulky heavy file with 15 books in every day & not acknowledging my concerns. Devon says that she as well as some of her friends have stiff or sore necks & backs. The local paper is going to run a piece for this weekend. I need to stay anonymous as I cannot risk Devon being teased or even worse because of my actions. It is a tough one to call, but I do need to put her first
Popcorn
I had a letter from the head today & it was very perfunctory (I am sure all of us who have written in will get the same letter),stating all the benefits of taking a bulky heavy file with 15 books in everyday ...but surely potential back problems will out-weigh any benefits (? which are what exactly) of lugging around a 14lb bag everyday. I hope the newspaper article generates some interest and you get other parents on board. Would be nice to see it if you can scan it in too. Mel (& Paul)
I think you should club together with other parents and send them all to school with huge wheely cases that will take up loads of room in the school and cause endless problems! perhaps then they'll reconsider! Because I lug loads of files around I have boxes on wheels - I got mine from Machine Mart - they are about £15 each and are bright green with a yellow pull up handle and little wheels - I think its a great idea if they insist the children bring all the books in. Cinnamon
I think its a great idea too, but then again I am not a fashion concious 12 year old who wants to be like her friends I have put it to her, & there is no way she is going to go for a wheely case,I'm afraid
Mel (& Paul)
Well, maybe the way round it is for all her friends to have one?! Perhaps my green wheelie is not the most fashionable thing - but may be it could be jazzed up a la the flowerey eglu! I do hope it gets sorted. We dont have children, but it seems like a stupid idea with no real basis for the head to say there are "benefits" - what ON EARTH are the benefits of bringing books to school that aren't needed. Being in the insurance industry I say get a letter to them about backi injury!
Cinnamon
Well, the piece is in the paper, not too large but big enough & on one of the first couple of pages. Its all very accuratly quoted & the School has not made a comment as yet, so if they do there may be a follow up next week. I have just finished a second letter to the head, then if I get no joy in the next week I may contact the local education authority & just let them know whats going on too I am hoping that the bit in the paper galvanises people & more come forward to the paper to make comments. The Dogmother
Good on yer Sarah Perhaps the paper will set up a box so that the public can reply to them and they will copy you with the letters, that way your name doesn't appear in connection with the issue. It mightn't hurt to copy these letters to the education authority too. I reckon that if they get a whiff of a health and safety issue going on, they will act promptly. I hope the head doesn't send you to Coventry! I love a good issue - can you tell?
Ladylucan
Good Luck Sarah, you will have to let us know what happens, I have four children, who all go to different schools, and its surprising how much they all differ!!!, I will be watching this with great interest, .. x
Sophieam101
Good Luck I am 13 so I know what its like to have to take a full five lessons books in I cant imagen how I would take all of my books. How do the teachers mark the HW if the pupil has to have all her books?

Cinnamon
Good LuckI am 13 so I know what its like to have to take a full five lessons books in I cant imagen how I would take all of my books. How do the teachers mark the HW if the pupil has to have all her books? Well - & this makes it even worse - as well as all her books, each book in her file is in a seperate section, with several clear envelopes for each subject where her homework goes. So, she just hands it in on a sheet of paper, it is marked then stuck into her book. What a waste of time & resourses!!! Sticking paper onto a paper page is utter madness & adds to the weight problem! Devons best pal is into Ballet & is really rather good, but she couldn't dance this week as her neck was so sore from all the extra weight. Also I have found out that everyone who wrote into the School recieved the same circular letter that I did, which really addressess none of the issued I raised at all I have written a letter to The Daily Mail & will let you know if it gets published
