Pains in early pregnancy?

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm sure that most people would probably ask about this sort of thing on mumsnet or somewhere similar but they're all a bit terrifying and I'm looking for some sensible advice and I know I can trust you.

I'm 6 weeks into my first pregnancy, and for the last 4 weeks I've been having cramps, a bit like period pain. I thought nothing of it since it's to be expected, but for the last 18 hours or so I've been having really awful cramps which come and go. They remind me of the period pains i had in childhood when I first started having periods, really sharp ones which come with awful lower back pain but they are coming and going, it's not constant. I called the doctor and she diagnosed a possible miscarriage in the offing.

I've had no bleeding at all, but then I've not had the top level constant throwing up morning sickness I was warned to expect. I feel a bit queasy and I've gone off certain foods, but I don't feel sick all day. Despite me being very careful with my diet (lots of fruit and veg and fresh meat, no chocolate, ice cream or rubbish etc) I've developed a fine belly.

Does anyone have any idea what may be the matter with me? Is it a miscarriage, or something less sinister. Is the pain normal, and I'm just such a complete wimp that I can't cope with it (if so, does not bode well for the birth)?

Thank you all in advance! I know you fine people are full of more sensible advice than most.

Everyone is different - what is normal for one is not for another and vice versa.

Did the Doctor recomend anything? If so, follow that advice. If you were not happy with what your Doctor said call back.

I would say try to stay relaxed and positive - but appreciate that is a lot easier said than done...

Righty ho. Morning sickness doesn't happen with everybody or every pregnancy. I had no symptoms other than a terrible IBS break out with my first pregnancy and then rotten nausea and fainting with this one (I'm 23 weeks pregnant ATM). So don't worry about the no morning sickness at all. Not bleeding is a very good sign that it's not a miscarriage, but I would be worried about an ectopic pregnancy. However they won't be able to see anything on a scan at the moment, so I can see why your doctor wanted to wait and see. In a week or so, they should be able to see a uterine pregnancy if there is one.

I had a lot of early round ligament pain with this one, which feels very achey and is a sharp pain when getting up or moving in certain ways.

With Imogen I had (TMI) screaming trapped wind and constipation. The combination of these two things made me wake up literally crying in the middle of the night with agonising stomach cramps, spasms and back ache, and I was unable to sleep properly for around a week until a combination of peppermint oil capsules and lactulose brought everything to a happier conclusion. If you're aware of being a bit 'backed up', which is very common in early pregnancy as the relaxin makes your bowel stop working as efficiently, then I would suggest you try some lactulose (perfectly safe in pregnancy) and take some peppermint oil capsules before eating (again perfectly safe). For me, it passed by around 8 weeks and I was fine thereafter. DON'T strain to go though, it's bad for you and dangerous and you'll break blood vessels in unpleasant places which will make you bleed.

Hope everything is ok. Don't worry about no morning sickness I don't recall having the slightest bit of nausea. I agree with the others that it is worth getting checked out. I found one of the woman GP's who was a little older than me so had been through pregnancy in the previous few years was the most sympathetic and gave the best advice. You may find your local surgery receptionists can point you at the best person to see for pregnancy concerns.

Thanks for the advice everyone! The doctor was very sympathetic and was not of the opinion that it was an ectopic pregnancy (pain is all over, not on one side) and said that there was very little they could check for due to the early stage of the pregnancy and so she didn't want to see me. I'm seeing the midwife next week for the first time.

Auntie-e, that sounds just like my pain, I've woken up in the night a few times. Could all my worries be some gas?!? I've always hide the digestion of an Oxen. I'll pop to boots tonight and pick up the pills you mentioned. I'm taking those pre-natal supplements with Iron which my mum insists are evil to the digestion.

Could well be, honestly it's terribly terribly painful if you get gas blocked up behind a sluggish bowel. The iron in prenatals can give people problems too. Orange juice is a good one for keeping your fibre content up.

I wasn't used to having to pay attention to how often I went, as I'd had IBS and frankly it happened when it happened, but only in my worst IBS breakouts had I experienced that level of pain! Not nice and it's often worst at night when you lie down. Hope it eases off for you and all is well with LO.

I had pain at around 6-8 weeks of my 2nd pregnancy, 1st ended in miscarriage..But the pain was very different from the miscarriage..it felt very much like bad period pain, I also had no bleeding, went for a scan and doctor told me you can get pain when the embryo is "burrowing" into position.Hopefully that or wind is causing your problem..

Everything crossed for you and let us know how you get on..I'll be thinking about you.. :D

Oh and TAKE IT EASY!! That's an order!!!!

Pregnancy can be all aches and pains for some. I remember some quite concerning pains all the way through all 3 of my pregnancies. Dull aches and sharp pains and for me increasing feelings of nausea with each child.

Try to relax as much as possible (I didn't relax at all with my first pregnancy - I remember even walking stiffly at first I think I was in shock for most of it  ). As Powerlady said there can be some pain at 6 weeks while the embryo gets settled and this can also lead to a little bleeding.

My tip if you are taking iron supplements is to have a portion of prunes everyday. The last thing you need is for things to get backed up as it were.

Hope things settle and everything goes well with the midwife next week.

Iron supplements cause me incredible pain and a hideous flare up of my IBS. I have to take Spatone, which is an easily absorbed iron rich water. The reason Iron pills are harsh on the digestion is that they are a poorly absorbed source of iron, so are many times your actually iron intake ( can you tell I've read up on this? I had to have a blood transfusion 6 weeks after my daughter was born as I was so ill due to anaemia, and bloodloss). If you continue to have pain, ring the doctor again, or go to your local walk in centre. Please don't feel that you are timewasting etc, or be made to feel like that. Pregnancy can be a time of great strain..physically and mentally...if you are unlucky, and you should expect to be listened to!! I hope you feel better soon x x x x

I've been pregnant 4 times, 3 babies, 1 miscarrage (2nd pregnancy). I never had morning sickness but had constipation with every preganancy. Fibregel worked well for me. I remember having cramping pains early on with each pregnancy but with the 2nd pregnancy I had blood loss early on as well as the pain eventually miscarrying at 12 weeks. If you get any more pain you can ask for an early scan - I don't think they can always detect a heart beat early on but at least they could see that it's in the right place. Hope all goes well.

If it's any comfort I had 2 miscarriages (both at 11 weeks) before I had my 2 girls and didn't have any of the symptoms you are describing. No pain or discomfort until the actual event.

It's a scary time as any twinge you would normally dismiss gets magnified in your head as something wrong with the pregnancy. Try to stay as relaxed as you can.

Thank you all so much for the advice and support! Whilst I'm still getting twinges I'm reassured that it's nothing unusual and since I'm seeing the midwife next week I'm going to take it as each day goes. Thank you all!

It seems the gods of morning sickness overheard my comment yesterday about the top-level throwing up, as I have spent a good portion of this morning becoming acquainted with various toilets. My other half thinks it's brilliant as it's "a sign you're OK".

I could kill him. Happily. With my bare hands.

Wowzer - MS is supposed to kick in betwen 6-8 weeks, and it is a sign that various hormone levels are rising, so your OH is partially right. I'd get used to the feeling of wanting to kill your OH, it lasts the whole way through. I had to stop myself pushing Duncan under a tube train once :wall:

My daughter had pain and bleeding at 7 weeks - on New Years Eve 1999 - hospitals were all in panic mode because of Year 2000......when "the end of the world as we know it" was going to happen :lol: No-one would even make an appt. and it was a week before she could have a scan.

She was fine and has a very active 10 year old to show for it :D

I had hyperemesis gravidarum....ie non stop vomiting, had meds in the end, as I was dehydrated, and had to go in hosp twice for fluids......when at 5 months pregnant, with no solid food eaten for several months without it re-apperaing, my Mother In Law and OH sat down with me and suggested I had a wash and put some make up on, as I might feel better if I didn't mope around the house...... bearing n mind that the smell of ANYTHING that wasn't ginger or sour lemon made me heave. I was sick in the shower often, beacuse of the smell of shower gel etc.... I soon told him where to go.....I bring it up when I want to annoy him

I hope you feel better soon...I swore by ginger tea..raw root ginger and hot water, with a spoon of sugar, I lived on it. ANd don't get out of bed without eating a rich tea biscuit! x x x x

In the end I was in such pain on Wednesday night that I got an appointment to see the doctor. She sent me off for a scan that afternoon that showed that everything was in the right place and that it was not an ectopic pregnancy thankfully!

They found that I have a tilted uterus, which explains why my period pains have always been so awful! She said that the way it's currently tilted (into the small of my back) is why the back pain is so bad, and that a combination of my uterus being buried in my intestines and trapped wind is causing my pain. She told me to give up on the evil iron pills and take pills without iron and just eat iron rich foods. I feel better already!

It was so strange, seeing the little bandit (so called as the embryo currently looks like a bandit with a black stripe across it) on the screen so quickly. I feel so much better just knowing everything is alright!

Thank you all again. Hopefully the rest of the pregnancy will continue without incident :)
