Helly Welly
Very cute chicks Martin, but if you are going to keep them, they will need a proper pen rather than an eglu as apparently they fly straight upwards when panicked and need a tall pen. If it gets in the paper, make sure they emphasis that other people shouldn't do the same, it'll be jsut like when "Finding Nemo" came out and everyone went looking for clown fish
Martin B
The photographer is on his way!!!!!!!!! The reporter will be in touch tomorrow about finalising the story and I would emphasise not to do it! Anyway! I doubt people would go out and buy an incubator unless they were serious about birds! theherd123
Oh Martin im so proud of you! You are so fab and im over the moon that you have chicks at last, you have tried so hard to achieve that goal. Egluntyne
Goodness me Martin....How did they find out about your babies. I never thought I would be buying The Sun. Will have to go into a different newsagent, wearing a balaclava in case there is any CCTV! Will it be in tomorrows paper?
The Dogmother
Aaaw martin, they are so gorgeous, I bet even your Dad loves them! Thanks for the PM, I feel honoured to be among the first to know. They are soo tiny and cute... I am proud of you, I just hope that you've got somewhere to keep them They often run cocks with flocks of both hens and quail, apparently it inproves egg yield. I reckon it's because they just can't be bothered to seperate them! Cxx
chocchick
The photographer is on his way!!!!!!!!! The reporter will be in touch tomorrow about finalising the story and I would emphasise not to do it! Martin B
Thanks for the continued kind words, it would be worth looking in tomorrows paper if you get chance, the photographer said that all the photos, story etc. were ready, they just need to find a slot for it! They said they would phone me, I'll let you know when I know! Martin
bronze
didnt want to start a new thread fro thtis but have always wondered When they hatch theyre still in the incubator right. Isnt it dangerous for them with the bits that move evry now and then and the heating element etc etc
The Dogmother
Yes, you have to stop it turning and move them over to a brooder
Cate in NZ
Lovely pics Martin Sorry I don't get the Sun, and they don't deliver your local paper down here , so don't forget to tell us all when the report gets published will you
Martin B
You have to take the incubator off the cradle so that it does not move - you do this 2 days before hatch date. The heat is fine, it is exactly the same temperature as them sitting under theie mums warm bum!
bronze
ahhh ok its the two days before bit that I wondered about. Good thing theyre more reliable at due dates than humans

Tara.F
I think I'm gonna have to wrestle my husband to the ground to stop him heading for Tescos have explained that we'd have to dispatch cock birds....that their little legs would slip thru the slats in the eglu (he suggested the guinea pig's cage)......that the neighbours would grass us up, but all to no avail! oh Martin! see what you've started? bronze
I know you can keep quails in aviarys with other birds. can they be kept with chickens? (If they had enough head height)
Egluntyne
Had a flick through the Sun in Tesco's today (wearing a wig and dark glasses). You didn't seem to be in it. Let us know won't you.
Aunty e
I've considered hatching quail in our ark, as it's the right shape, and Spitalfields City Farm have a whole bunch of them, boys and girls, running together, so their quail eggs would all be fertile. Do you think Penny (the pekin) would be alright with baby quail?
Sophieam101
Hello all, long time since Ive posted... sorry! Well done Martin!!! I have just done excatly the same as you except my eggs were from a farm although they were meant for eating. Quail eggs that is!!! I had wanted quails for about a year, so i read up about them ages ago and found a really good book, Keeping Quail by Katie Thear (anything by her is always good!) I had 12 eggs in the incubator and 11 hatched although three needed some help (I know your not surpose to but I can't sit back and watch a half hatched chick die!) However two of them have crooked toes which is when their little feet are all twisted! So they have been tape flat with cardboard and medical tape, hard to do as the feet are so tiny! Ive been told that you can keep quail anywhere, most people do it in either rabbit hutches (with runs) or averys (they pick up the dropped seed). They are ever so sweet and ever so fast! They were the easyest things Ive ever hatched, even easier than pekins. Sorry i seem to have written quite an essay! Sophie
