Hi guys, can I ask what you all use to clean and disinfect the coop? I was thinking of using Barrier V1. What do you think?

I use poultry shield in the cube and Eglu. Stalosan F in the WIR

 

I also use red mite powder sprinkled in both for good measure

I use Virkon to completely disinfect my eglu every 4 weeks. I clean the roosting bars twice a week at this time of year with just warm water and washing up liquid.

I use poultry shield. I don't go mad with it, I have probably done a full disinfect 3 times in the past year although the perch and poo tray get done more regularly as they get a bit gross.

I use Viratec - fantastic stuff.

 

They get a weekly scrub, then go in the dishwasher with just the dog and cat bowls. Disinfect roughly once a month.

I use poultry shield in the coop every week. am i overdoing it???? could i get away with just sweeping out the old straw etc and replacing?

 

i have to say in the winter it's a bit of a mission getting the coop to dry after I've sprayed it.

Mine is a wooden coop and I don't go mad with the PS in the winter for exactly the same reason as you - it takes forever to dry out.

I'm not saying my way is necessarily the best way, but my hens certainly seem happy and healthy enough. I poo pick every day and change bedding and sweep out weekly so hopefully there's not too many nasties and stale bedding lurking. My coop does't smell either.

neither does mine. i am very proud of that fact.

 

although i have noticed (sorry, really grim bit coming) that every morning the girls each do one ENORMOUS poo. like the morning turnout or something. and they never do it in the coop, they always wait till the pop hole is open and then do it in the run. and that poo stinks.

 

I've also noticed that they never poo where they dustbathe.

 

there must be some level of continence then, surely...?

I use poultry shield and stalosan F powder plus a red mite barrier powder (mixed with the stalosan)

I wash it down every 1 and a half weeks (roughly) I wipe it down with an old dish cloth to dry it out and use a brush from brush and dust pan to dust the powder round the coop....

I think you come to know when it needs a clean, with daily poo picks it's probably fine to be left a while but the girls

seem to like it when it's clean and go scratching around joyously in it so keeps me happy too!

If it smells like ammonia then it's well overdue.... this is bad for their respiratory systems.

Yes giant morning poos! They make me wonder if I'm overfeeding them! Does anyone else get those????!

Thanks guys, this is our 3rd day of chicken ownership and we have been poo picking every day and plan to do a more thorough clean of the coop weekly. We dust everywhere with Diatom and will redo any area needed weekly. I was looking for a spray cleaner to 'spot clean' on the perches etc if needed. I think I'll go with Poultry Shield.

 

We are still trying to figure out the best way to go with the slide out tray under the perches. We started out using newspaper with a thin layer of shavings (well Nedzbed, similar to shavings), but my partner found the shavings just blew all over him this morning when he slid (the rather large) tray out (Bad of me to laugh). He has just put newspaper in today and said it will be easy to just gather it up for disposal. This method is not conducive to me having chicken poo in my compost bin because it will be stuck to the paper and there is only so much (a small amount) of newspaper a person can sensibly have in a compost bin! What do you think?

This method is not conducive to me having chicken poo in my compost bin because it will be stuck to the paper and there is only so much (a small amount) of newspaper a person can sensibly have in a compost bin! What do you think?

 

Don't worry most of it shakes off the newspaper to compost
