Tigerlily
Check if it crows Good advice. Lol! I had thought of that as well! I've tried replying twice but my posts disappear... grrr! I think she poss could be an ex-bat... by the sounds of the txt they know where she's from and she may have been turfed out of her previous home cos she isn't laying, poor thing I am phoning my friend who lives in Westhoughton nr Bolton for the full story... will keep you updated and try & find more info out on little Clucky bless her x Take care xxx
Lavenders_Blue
Ooooh how exciting! I acquired a CoF earlier in the year, the intros weren't too bad. I kept her separate for a week - lots and lots of squaring up at the divide - by which time things were settling down (and I was getting fed up of doing two lots of cleaning, water and food ) so I let her out to FR with the original girls. I was lucky in that she was totally horrible to them all and established herself as top hen within about 30 seconds! Introducing one hen is perfectly possible, just keep an eye on them and take the intros as quickly or slowly as you need to. Oh and check her over for beasties etc before letting her in with your other girls.
Tigerlily
A little update I phoned my friend earlier. Clucky has been roaming round their garden for a couple of months and roosting in a tree at night... She follows their cat around like a little shadow, bless her x Obviously they asked around when she appeared and literally bumped into someone who asked them had they found a hen... Now this is the weird bit (just can't get my head round it): The owner apparently rescues ex-bats and Clucky was a hen who free ranged on a farm originally... I don't know how they acquired her. She escaped as she hated being in the coop. The owner of Clucky thanked her for looking after her but said something like: "well if you really like her you can have her" My friend has no knowledge of chook-keeping or, hens! She doesn't have anything to house her in and no way should a chicken should be on it's own... I find the owner's advice really odd - If that was my hen I would be desperate to find her and get her back home! My friend said she seen the coup that the others were kept in and it was really small I think she felt Clucky was better off in her garden really. She presumed as she isn't laying that the owner just didn't want her poor chick x I think I've talked Mr TL into adopting her well he knows he has no choice really! I hope I'm doing the right thing Take care xxx
Plum
Great, she'll have a loving home. And a new set of trees to roost in Hope you can catch her.
Chortle Chook
So has Clucky arrived? Have you got her on her own or is she with the others? The advice here is really good and I'll try to bear it in mind should I ever get a COF. Before reading this I think I'd have just run out, got her, put a bit of frontline on her neck and popped her in with my others in the dark hoping that my own chooks and OH would not notice one more hen (or any resulting "Ooops, word censored!"els). Looks to me like you hit the happy medium between kindness and caution and I'm longing to know how it all goes.
