soapdragon
Hello We have three Light Sussex bantams which we got in the Summer when they were about 6/8 weeks old. We have resigned ourselves to the fact that we will not get our first eggs until Spring but, today, when I went to pick up two of the girls they crouched down with their wings out. I understand that this is because they think I'm a cockerel (and I thought they were clever!!) so could this possibly mean that they are about to lay? Their combs are nice and bright (but have been for some time) and they are eating well (warm mash for breakfast most days!!) Any ideas, anyone, or will we just have to wait it out? Thanks! Ain't Nobody Here
Could well be . In my experience, eggs come a week or so after the first crouching . Hope you get one (or more!) soon . I love it when they crouch - they look so cute . (And they're much easier to pick up!)

soapdragon
OOOh, thanks for that; I'm all eggcited now! As to how we will cook it...hummmm, hadn't quite thought that through yet! Probably scrambled as we can all have a peck at it then. The silly girls have a lovely warm comfy straw filled nest in the Eglu but keep chucking the straw out - I've watched them;they form a chain gang I guess we'll have to keep an eye round the garden in all their favourite places! I'll post when we have a result or two Korma Kiev Casserole
Burtie14
Yep, they definitely think you're a gentleman chicken, come to 'make friends' - your girls are becoming young ladies! I bet your first egg is a double yolker!
soapdragon
YES!!! We had our very first egg this morning! Mind you, the daft bird decided to lay on the patio so the eggs wasn't eggzactly in tip top condition but, as I got to it when it was still warm, I did scramble it - very nice it was too! I'm just a bit concerned now about getting them to lay in the Elgu. I cleaned out the nesting area this pm and lined it with straw and put in a dummy egg...anything else I can do to persuade them not to lay right outside the back door!!?? Thanks Korma Kiev Casserole
Ain't Nobody Here
Congratulations . Knew you wouldn't have to wait long . You'll probably find that they lay their next eggs in the right place. The first one often seems to take them by surprise .
