Wallpapering for dummies

Recommended Posts

I have just bought my first ever rolls of wallpaper from the M&S sale (£5 each instead of £15!) to do my bathroom. I have never done wallpapering before, so was hoping for some pearls of wisdom from the Omleteers :D EG any recommendations of which paste to use? Thanking you very much :D

The only advice I can give is to get someone else in to do it. When I tried it was a disaster.

Sorry

:lol: Brilliant! My hubby thinks he'll end up doing it. He of little faith! He didn't think I'd be able to do the cork tiles on the downstairs loo floor. It did take me a while, and I used up nearly all my tiles, but I did it. And its still down. And not curled up at the edges

I love wallpapering!!!

There should be instructions on the back of the label - usually inside the clear wrapping. It will tell you how long to soak the paper for - very important or else it will not work properly. Look on the paste packets and they will list what sort of papers they are suitable for and how strong to mix the paste

Cut the first piece of paper to size, allowing a couple of inches extra so that you can trim the ends on the wall, paste and allow to soak for the correct time - if the piece is long, fold over gently, pasted sides together.

Draw a vertical line on the wall either with a plumb line or a leveller thing with a bubble (the name has escaped me!) where the first piece of paper will finish and line up the paper against this - the end of your wall may not be straight so do not start against it. Use a pasting brush or a sponge (depending on your paper - if its for a bathroom I assume it is vinyl so a damp sponge is the way to go) and gently sponge upwards and downwards aligning the paper to your pencilled line and making sure there is an overlap top and bottom. Make a crease (or draw a line) top and bottom and cut so the paper fits snugly.

Do the next piece the same but if there is a pattern match make sure you allow for it when cutting !

If bubbles appear an hour or so after you have finished don't panic - when it has completely dried they will usually go.

Have fun

I'm not sure the pastes are all the same but I'd use an anti fungal one for the bathroom

I think they are all anti fungal these days, but check the wrapper first!

I buy my paste from the cheap shops, it stays on the wall just as well as any other paste!

Good advice from Chickendoodle. I do wallpaper, but don't love doing it, see blog link in sig for latest wallpapering effort. Don't be afraid to reposition it and pull it off the wall if you think it is in slightly the wrong place. It isn't permanent until the paste is dry! Also, if you have room corners which are not quite square you can cut down the corners to avoid creases. You can also insert bits of wallpaper behind any small gaps. If you have any shelves or anything attached to the wall, take them off but put the screws back in to show where to put them back again, but be careful about smoothing the paper down!

Don't forget to show us before and after pics!

Spirit level?

Thank you for all that info - most helpful. I don't think it is suitable for a bathroom really, but anything will be 100% better than the rubbishy walls we have now (I removed old HORRID wallpaper a few years ago, and a bit of the plasterboard paper oops, so they are all patchy and not a bit smooth). It's this one http://www.marksandspencer.com/Marks-and-Spencer-Shimmer-Wallpaper/dp/B001D2139Q?extid=af_a_Content_71959 We have a lovely 70's bathroom suite in green (not avocado, but proper green) which once everything is done in the bathroom will look nice.

I will take pics, charlottechicken (your wallpaper looks beautiful, and I have fireplace envy, even though my mock wood-burner and wooden surround looks nice, nothing beats the real thing) but it doesn't look too nice currently. We are trying to decide what to do with the tiles; either re-tile over them with plain white square tiles or get some tile paint.

Never thought I'd meet someone who likes decorating. I have wallpapered but its hard work. Good luck

I like wallpapering and decorating.......and plumbing.......it's a while since I papered though. I like the new wallpapers I've seen on some of the house programmes on TV (and Claire's of course!)so may have to think about it.
