chestnutmare
Another egg today! Snowy showed interest in the nesting box this morning, but this was after we'd cleaned the Eglu. So perhaps she was just being nosey. She came back out, we waited 5mins then came in for breakfast. It's a shame we didn't catch the hen in the act. There is some debate. What do you think? Hopefully I've added a poll. Yesterday's on the left, today's on the right. Edited January 10, 2011 by Guest
Olly
Gosh - eggs already! It seems only a few days since you were ordering your Go! My guess is the Bluebelle; mine lays pale, smooth eggs although it's hard to remember as I haven't seen one for some weeks.
meezers
I'd guess the white star, simply because my bluebelles eggs were slightly darker with a pinky tinge to them.
chestnutmare
I know, I was very excited to see the eggs - especially yesterday's - so soon! Okay, so it could be any of them. So far I've had the Columbine, Bluebell and White Star theories.
Space Chick
My guess would be the Columbine (which would be gutting as I know you wanted Blue or Green eggs) but if your White Star is a White star her eggs should be whiter (if she's a particularly White Amber star though, I would say it's hers, but she has a White star comb), they look took pale to be the bluebells. It is a mystery though, and I can't wait to find out who is laying, you'll have to watch the, like a hawk tomorrow
chestnutmare
It is a mystery, Such a shame I missed who laid them as we spend time outside watching them. I did want colourful eggs but I'll try to be grateful for what I get. Afterall, I've never seen chicken eggs this colour before. Webcam? Mollie333
I'd say Willow. Only because i'd think that the White Star's would be more white, and the Bluebelles would be a different colour, darker i think. 2 eggs are great.
Chickvic
Those eggs are identical to my Hemmy's eggs She's a Bluebell and she lays lovely pale speckled eggs
chestnutmare
I don't know whether it's exciting or frustrating not knowing who laid 'em! Thanks for your thoughts. The first egg is a goner - I had a lovely fried egg and OH tried it too. The first time for him to taste a fresh egg. It was so pretty on my eggsekelter - I didn't want to crack it. I could go outside and watch for a very long time tomorrow... but if I did that I wouldn't get an egg that day.
sjp
the colour of the right hand one is about right for a columbine. mine lays the same colour. I assume that is the secound egg laid
chestnutmare
As the last two eggs were laid late morning I've been out a few times this morning to find Snowy sitting in the nesting box. After my second visit I could see she had finished and that she was just snoozing in the nesting box so used a tiny bit of corn to call her out. And there, in the nesting box, was an egg just like the last two. So it looks like the mystery is no more.
scarlettohara
I think your columbine will lay a coloured egg
Snowy
Good old Snowy! There is another hybrid, not very common, called a Coral Nick. They are easily mistaken in looks for a whitestar and lay a pale cream egg. I had one who was supposed to be a whitestar and wasn't. Looks like Snowy may also be a Coral. Mine was a superb layer and not quite as flighty as the whitestars

I just Googled and yes, they look the same! But surely the breeders would know the breed? *shrugs* Are they bred differently? What was your Coral like? My three haven't been left out of the run yet, they're still settling in. But Snowy is very bossy and will 'go' for anyone who wishes to eat next to her. Snowy
I bought mine as a whitestar as well. It's rare that the suppliers actually breed these hybrids - they are mass bred in the czech republic and shipped over here. The suppliers take delivery of them and we buy them, so it's not surprising some get mixed up!

Aaannd, the place I bought Snowy from are selling corals too. So is it just the egg colour that defines what is a White Star or a Coral? Snowy
I'm not really sure - there must be something different in the breeding of the coral, because the whitestar is basically a white leghorn and leghorns always lay white eggs. So something else must have been introduced to the mix to get the cream egg. But they look almost identical - I struggle to tell the difference between my 20 week old whitestar and my 3 year old coral. I found my girl a bit more docile and friendly than the pure whitestars who are total nutters! If yours is asserting herself, it is probably just because she is the only one laying and is making sure the others know she is top dog! I thought Snowy fitted the bill as a White Star but as you say, she's laying. It's amazing how I've assumed she's a nutty White Star. She seems to be more settled now. On her first morning she was looking for an escape route out of the run. And she would peck at the other two if they dared come near her food (still does but not so bad). She eats more than the other two (although there are two food sources now), she gobbles the stuff down every morning while the others peck quite lady-like. Again, this is due to her being in lay I suppose.
