Groovychook
I noticed that Elsie was looking hunched yesterday- not her normal self at all. When I checked on her this morning, she's still looking a bit sorry for herself and has a full & squishy crop. I'm thinking that this might mean that she has sour crop... not had any experience of this before, so I've just had a look in FAQ's. I'm going to try massaging her crop in a minute & tipping her gently to see if I can get her to expel some of it, but I also noticed a mention of Flowers of Sulpher being useful in treating sour crop. I bought some of this a couple of years ago- can't remember why now! I just wondered if anybody had any thoughts as to how to administer it? Christian
I first used it with my light Sussex a couple of years ago. I mixed it with natural yoghurt and she ate it quite happily I mixed about 1/2 teaspoon with a small tub of yoghurt and fed it over a couple of days. Good luck. Groovychook
Thanks Christian- I shall try that... I've just been massaging her crop and managed to get rid of some of the contents. It doesn't feel empty though and I stopped trying after a little while because I didn't seem to be getting anywhere I tried to tempt her with some yoghurt, bokashi & garlic but she would only eat a tiny amount. I'm going to leave her for a little while now and then see if I have any more luck later... Fingers crossed.
Ain't Nobody Here
I couldn't remember what you do with it so am interested to read Christian's answer. Have you used Daktarin oral gel too? I managed to cure sour crop using that (I'm assuming it helped!) Good luck, hope you have a good outcome .

No I haven't, but I'll give it a go... thanks for the tip! I'm wondering if there's something else wrong though. I've just emptied the poo trays and were a couple of runny droppings with blood in them. I'm presuming that they came from Elsie. Not sure what to do now- she's cuddled up with the other two girls at the moment and looks quite content. Think I'm going to leave her be and check on her in a little while. sandyhas3chucks
if there is blood might it be best tp assume the worst and coccidiossis and treat with the cooccoud stuff that is not licenced fr poultry that is used for pigeons ???? I used FOS the same also..... Aparently maggots will work too as they will eat the gloop burt it is worth bearing oin mind that a sour crop is usual a sympton of something else not an "illness" in it's own right. Good luck
Groovychook
An update on Elsie... After doing my best to empty her crop on Saturday, I tried to tempt her with bokashi, yoghurt & garlic but she only picked at it and looked very subdued and hunched. There wasn't much of an improvement on Sunday either and I was starting to fear the worst. Her comb and face were very pale and although there had been no more poo's with blood in, her droppings were a bit on the runny side and fairly dark. It looked like she wasn't digesting her food very well either. I was all set to whisk her off to the vet on Monday morning, but when I opened up the cube first thing, she flew straight out and started strutting about! Her comb has pinked up again and she tucked into a weetabix, bran & yoghurt breakfast. Her appetite seems to have returned and her eyes look bright... she even hitched a ride on my back whilst I poo picked the run! Her poo's are looking more normal too. She hasn't laid an egg since last Thursday but apart from that, fingers crossed, she seems to be back to normal. I'm slightly worried that it might be coccidiosis (sp?!) because of that lone bloody poo, but would she have improved as much as she has if it was? I've bought some Coxoid today and I'm wondering if I should treat them anyway just to be on the safe side? I'm going to do a full bedding change and cube disinfect tomorrow- I've got some Virkon and I've sent off for some Stalosan too. Will it do them any harm if I treat them with coxoid if they haven't got coccidiosis? They were only wormed last week with flubenvet too- the course finished last Wednesday. Would appreciate any advice!!
Groovychook
Elsie seems back to full health- still no nasty poo's and her normal good appetite has returned Have done the big clean today but am holding off with the coxoid for now... If she has got coccidiosis, would she have bounced back to health like this? I'm confused! I would send off a poo sample to be analysed but it's hard to see who's doing what now & they all look normal!
Redwing
I'd leave it She could have been cooking up a soft egg which does make them very under the weather, hens often eat these after laying them so you'd be none the wiser She probably wont ahve bounced back from cocci like that, I'd treat the blood in the poo as a strange one off
Egghead68
That's great she's bounced back! I've seen blood in the poo a couple of tmes without the chickens being ill. Assumed they had eaten something scratchy but who knows.
Groovychook
Thank you so much both of you! You've put my mind at rest At least I've got the Coxoid now in case I need it at a later date.
coco
Glad you girl is better. Flora had Cocci and she was really ill with it. I think she would have died without treatment.

Groovychook
Thank you, she's still doing okay I've just been rooting through all the bedding in search of dodgy poo's but can't see anything untoward... Hoping that whatever it was that made her so poorly has been & gone!
