chestnutmare
I noticed this evening that, at times, Snowy is sort of making a short squeeking sound as her head flicks from one side to another. Is she sneezing? Has she got a cold? We haven't handled them yet as we wanted them to settle. We can hand feed them though and now they've been here a week we intend on giving them all a looking over tomorrow. I've done a search for sneezing and colds. Do I only need to worry if she has a runny nose or sounds rattley when breathing? I'm just thinking about what I need to be looking out for tomorrow when we check her. Thanks. Edit: It's nearly two weeks since I posted the original thread. I didn't think it was that long. Snowy is still sneezing and I don't know if it was my imagination but I'm wondering if Willow sneezed this morning... if she did it was once and very lady like and quiet. Whereas Snowy is making noise. It's not chronic but it seems quite consistent. Now I can't see any discharge from her nose. We will be handling them again this weekend because we now have Omlet netting put up for them to have a wander. This will make handling (in a secure place) easier. She seems okay in her self and is laying well. I've added Poultry Spice to their feed, they've probably had it for several days, although at the moment they've turned their noses up at their current layers pellets (waiting on delivery of Garvo and Omlet feed at the moment). I've ordered Citricidal and that should be with me today or tomorrow. They were wormed with Flubenvet last week. Should she still be sneezing? I am worried about her. Is there anything else I can do before considering a vet? Although I don't know if there's a vet who's knowledgable about chickens in the area. Will have to PM Space Chick!... Edit, again! Just saw a bubble come from her nose. I have an early appointment for the vet tomorrow. Edited January 27, 2011 by Guest
sharon1
Hi when I got my chooks last August, age 8 weeks old at the time, one of them had a bit of a cold even a runny nose (had to dart out the way when she sneezed, I kept an eye on her regularly, she was eating and drinking well, so I left it as she seemed healthy otherwise. After a week or so the cold went. I was told that sometime a cold can be brought on by stress especially in young chickens after the drive from their old home to their new one. But if you are concerned, I'm sure your vet won't mind you phoning him/her even just for advice.
Christian
I would say stress too. It is quite a lot for new hens to change home and settle in. If they are eating and drinking ok, then I wouldn't worry too much about them. Just keep an eye and see if she improves.
Gertie
You could try putting something in the water like a tonic/supplement. Citricidal is supposed to be good for colds, or maybe some Herban or Lifeguard might ward off anything if it is just a sniffle. I have to say, Lifeguard is amazing stuff. I gave it to my exbatts after they arrived and they have done really well, new feathers, no illnesses (touch wood), laying well despite the terrible weather and their condition. Hope your girl is better tomorrow
chestnutmare
Ahh poor Snowy. She's well in herself - still bossy and eating plenty. We've kept to a routine and haven't handled them yet not to stress them any more than needs be but no doubt the move was stressful. Thanks for the recommendations. I have Poultry Spice (I bought as a 'just incase'). Is this worth using for a cold/similar to the other products?
Gertie
I think it is a tonic, essentially the same as lifeguard which is supposed to improve all round health/performance. I tend to prefer the liquid tonics as I find them easier to plop in the water. I found the spice sunk to the bottom and I was never quite sure how much to use. I think if you use the powder, coating the layers pellets in a little oil first will help it to stick to them so it won't sink to the bottom of the feeder. It certainly smells lovely! I don't think it can do any harm to try that. Glad she is ok in herself. I had a poorly (one of my first), it was such a worry! Good luck with the handling tomorrow

Ewsee
Hi When my chicken had a cold, her nose was all blocked and her breathing was muffled. I gave her a warm bath, then snuggled her in a towel and blanket, it helped clear the nose. Hope this helped....... I don't think there is anything to worry about, my chicken soon perked up and was back to her usual self very soon. Oh, and make sure your chicken drinks lots of water.... chestnutmare
Updated, Snowy's still sneezing.
Plum
Watch for little bubbles in the eyes or a swelling of sinus's in front which could indicate myco. If she is well and eating and drinking and no rattle when breathing then I would carry on but check bedding it may be dusty and irritating

She's/they are on Tylan (?) - she has a respitory tract infection although her lungs are clear and she is healthy and bright otherwise. She's still sneezing today but hopefully she'll be better soon. Thanks, Plum.
scarlettohara
The antibiotics will work quickly, having so many girls I often get a wheezy one - as long as you catch it early they seem to respond well Honey (or Sicknote ) appears to have asthma Sometimes I take her to the vet but if it is mild she gets over it with tlc and lifeguard. Ah bless her, asthma. Has she got a mini asthma pump? I've heard Lifeguard is good.
