Have been having rather a problem with egg eating. I've decided to convert the nest box area in the Cube into another roosting area and site these under the cube.

Interested to know how you get on. caught my new exbats egg eating today. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt and upping their grit but may resort to new nest boxes

You have to admire their marketing - they use pictures of the most ramshackle, delapidated, clarty wooden nest boxes they could find to make their bright, shiny, plastic nest boxes look even better!

 

They are very snazzy though.

I didn't notice. I had eyes only for the nest box, which seems to be the answer I have been looking for.

My understanding is that to get them used to using it, you make it as like the one they are familiar with as possible to start with, and then wean them off the straw/hay etc, so there will be a bit of a transition period.

I think the chick box is a standalone nest box and you buy the rollaway bit to insert into the chick box. Obviously you can't use any nesting material though.

 

Anyone else wonder what on earth his hens got up to in their old nest boxes (I think he said he had which took him an hour and a half to clean every week? Dirty girls!!!

The roll away insert and the collecting tray are both included in the price.

ah I can see that now I've looked at the Flyte site I'd only watched his 3 minute video which shows them being used with and without the insert. It should solve the egg eating problem anyway.

They are the ones I was looking at. I sent several e-mails to the company asking if they had plans to make different coloured ones. Some nice red or purple ones would be perfect.

Dead easy to put together, although you will notice I have the bar thingy of the brown one in the wrong hole. Easily fixed.

 

In place now and the hens circulating round them with suspicion.

 

Am impressed with the construction. They seem robust.

A resounding success.

 

After a couple of days uncertainty, and an egg or two laid on the roosting bars placed in the old nest box, they are now using these.

 

Clean, unbroken eggs at last. Hurrah!

They look like a really good well put together design. Egluntyne, are you using them without any nesting material as I assume that that is the only way that the eggs will rollaway
