chicken bark
Someone near me is downsizing so I am buying 3 of their hens. (I'm worried another one might slip in the carrier ). I've got my eye on a Blue Orpington and 2 Salmon Faverolles - they are all 2009/10 hens. They will be my first big fluffy cuddly hens and I'm like a giddy teenager with excitement. I will be getting them next weekend when of course I will post photos. Any comments about the breeds? Oohs and ahhs welcome of course. chicken bark
More hens! Lucky you! Which house will they be living in? My Solway house is empty at the moment so they will live in there. I've got a 3 metre run on it so it is ideal for quarantining for the first week or so. Of course as you know I have managed to fit another perch in mine so I could put a few more in the house but don't fancy keeping more than 3 big girls in a run that size permanently for 2 weeks. Fingers crossed I should also be getting a converted rabbit hutch to use as a sick bay/broody if I need it in the future. I do feel very fortunate. I have truly fallen down that slippery slope of chicken addiction. I can't wait. Although I do confess I don't enjoy the intro's bit. It is funny when I first looked a faverolles a year ago I thought they looked odd and they didn't fit with my idea of chicken keeping. Now I think they look cuddly. Plum
Ooooh Aaaah Agree my choice in chickens has moved since starting. I never warmed to the feathery feet now I'm going mushy when i see a cochin.
Sageandonion
Congratulations, at the risk of getting censored, I'd love a big fluffy bummed one Pics please when you get them
Minnie&Moose
Ooooh Aaaah Agree my choice in chickens has moved since starting. I never warmed to the feathery feet now I'm going mushy when i see a cochin. I'm with you there Plum. My chicken mad son insisted on a cochin for Christmas - and I'm now totally besotted. Can't get enough of our chicken 'in pyjamas' as she plods round the garden 20 feet behind the rest! And she's by far the tamest and easiest to catch - probably because she just can't run very fast so she gets more cuddles than any of the others
chicken bark
Picking them up tomorrow. Fingers crossed. I'll actually be getting a Buff Orpington and 2 Salmon Faverolles not the Blue Orp that I mentioned before due to my minor cock up . Can't wait. Have just cleaned the hen houses out and disinfected everything ready for their arrival tomorrow night, so the other hens know something is up. Will post photos when I can. There is no point in hiding my excitement!
chicken bark
The 2 Salmon Fav's and the Buff Orp and now tucked up in bed. They are seriously big girls. Had a little cuddle with each but it was late so put them straight to bed. I shall spend more time with tomorrow and hopefully post some pics. I'm thinking of naming them Fudge, Toffee and Caramel. Eggasperated
Great names! Looking forward to pics - will they fit through the pophole on the Solway ok? (Not the pics, the fluffy girls ).
chicken bark
Great names!Looking forward to pics - will they fit through the pophole on the Solway ok? (Not the pics, the fluffy girls ). I'll find out tomorrow! If not I'll have to quickly assemble the converted rabbit hutch and run I also acquired. The lady I got them from is so lovely - the hens all mean a lot to her so I know they have been well looked after. Roll on tomorrow.
chicken bark
Here are some photos of Caramel the Buff Orp and Fudge and Toffee the Salmon Faverolles. The girls came from quite a muddy place (hence why the lady wanted them to be rehomed) so when they are settled in a bit I may try giving them a bath! Apologies for the photos - I have such slow broadband and got fed up of fighting with photobucket.

chickenopolis
Oh My God......I so want a fluffy Orp. As OH often says to me when I get animated about chickens "Ok...now breathe slowly and calm down"...... I bet they are lovely to cuddle - they look very pretty. Love the names. goodinparts
They are absolutely beautiful - and the right names too I've wanted a faverolles since before I got my first girls last year - and today, my dream came true Whenever I drive to Cambridge to see my son, I pass Mini Meadows but I usually have a car full of student bits, or a student or am in a huge rush. Not today.... So....I turned off the main road & found my way to their door..... Lovely set up, beautiful birds and great people. They happened to have a salmon faverolles ready to go, who had been living with some bantams for company since her sisters were all sold last weekend (when the spring sun brought everyone out in search of chickens)......and as I wanted a faverolles AND some bantams, how could I resist. So...Faith the faverolles, Hope the lemon pekin and Charity the sort of buff with a few mille fleurs bits pekin made the journey from Welford to Stroud and I now have set up for feathery footed girls They seem very happy together - Faith is so gentle that the size doesn't worry me though I've had to put her back in the cat basket this evening as she had a cut on her foot and Hope was rather too interested in the blood I've given Faith a bath and will slip her into the go at bedtime, once she's dry.... Pics soon but not tomorrow - Sundays and vicars are not the best combination when hoping for space to play with the chooks.
fluffy chick
here too!
chicken bark
They sound wonderful. Hope Faith's toe heals quickly. I love the fact that Pekins snuck in there too! Fudge has this really endearing run - she sort of waddle runs. None of my other hens do it and it always brings a smile to my face. I've got some Salmon Faverolles eggs in the incubator - fingers crossed some of those are fertile. I've got some Pekins in there too.
