Jukebox Tim
Sadly, after two years of prolific egg-laying, our Pepperpot, LaVern, became ill with what seemed like a fungal infection of her crop. We had her on a course of medication and, although she rallied for a few days, her condition worsened and we had to put her out of her suffering. We're left with our Maran (Bessie) and Ranger (Mabel) - the extended run looks too big without LaVern so, today, we've bought a Coral hybrid and another Pepperpot. Helly Welly
So sorry about LaVern, at least she had a happy life with you. I see you subscribe to the immediate replacement theory, me too, i wouldn't be able to handle seeing the extra space. May you have as many happy times with the new girls as i'm sure you did with LaVern

Jukebox Tim
Thank you all. How very kind. For those of you who asked, we're getting the new chooks from Hollywater Hens, near Bordon (Surrey/Hants border). The lady there is the best in the area for hybrids but, if you want a pure breed, I also recommmend Simon Bates at the Garden Hen Company in Windsor. Regards, Tim

Jukebox Tim
Since the demise of LaVern we have added two new chooks to the "clutch"; Mojo and Lucille have joined Bessie and Mabel. We got them from Jayne at Hollywater Hens (very helpful) not far from Farnham. They both surprised us with a couple of small eggs yesterday, much to the annoyance of Bessie and Mabel. There's been a bit of argey-bargey but it should settle down in a day or two. Shame the weather is so dire because we've not really been able to let them out of the run.
