kinsk
We used to take bets on whether there would be more Stobarts or James Irlam wagons, but then would forget to keep count
chick wiggle
Ah yes James Irlam, i do believe stobarts bought them out a few years ago. Ive been to their depot a few times too.
Valkyrie
Remember when the Ryder vans used to be yellow? The boy always liked those - he had a Matchbox version (or maybe it was a Dinky). I liked the green ones with the little stick man. Have no idea who that is.

Kirstine
We used to play a motorway game with quite complex scoring rules. Eddies scored 1, Norberts 5, NFT (Nifty?) Distribution 1, and so on. Lafarge lorries scored minus 10 because my friend's ex used to work for them! We would always have a 'guest lorry of the day' as well for 5 points. One of my faves was Willi Betz. Cinnamon
Just driven to Canterbury & back for a Uni visit & spotted 14 Stobies Changing the subject slightly,I have never driven so far in one jaunt before & no realise that I find it almost impossible to keep to the speed limit on the motorway. I had no idea there were speed cameras.........this could end up being a very expensive trip

gongladosh
I used to drive a lot in my previous job - long journeys always used to go more quickly when stobart spotting... My record was 19 on a 170 mile journey

I believe in the "trade" the full name for the "Norberts" are "Norbert Dingle Dangles..." my OH runs a transport company, and has spent (and sometimes with his "Thunderbirds" hat on still does spend ) many an hour behind the wheel so we try not to look at "wagons" when we are out and about as it depresses him when he is off duty.... re Stobart and entirely my observation cos I'm in charge of the laundry......why would you want your drivers to wear a shirt and tie for goodness sake, when there's every chance that they are going to have to do some mechanic -ing at some point during their day/week/ whatever?....there are always those small breakdowns that the driver can fix himself...but he might need to get his hands dirty....and his t-shirt /jeans/ jacket......etc...What they really need imo is disposable overalls..... On the bridges,on the motorway - how sneaky is that? As this was my longest solo trip Hubby gave me loads of tips, but didn't mention those cameras,& I didn't notice really,as I was concentrating so hard I know I shouldn't speed, but I was just keeping pace with the rest of the traffic. I was very, very good on the way home though
The Dogmother
*Ummmm* they've been there for years Sarah. I take it that you're a new driver? We've a road in Banbury - straight and wide, which the rozzers are always holing up on, sarnies in their car and speed gun at the ready It's not worth it to speed nowadays with petrol being so expensive. I used to be a bit of a petrol head but just can't afford it these days. If anyone is a nervous or inexperienced driver, I'd recommend them taking a course with the Institute of Advanced Motorists; a friend is an instructor and we've been out driving a few times, and even with 31 years of (safe) driving, some of it long distance, under my belt, I learned a good few things. Plus, if you pass the advanced test you can save money on your insurance.
Cinnamon
*Ummmm* they've been there for years Sarah. I take it that you're a new driver? No, just new to the M25 Never driven on it before..........in fact I have never driven more than an hour before in my 25 odd years of driving - never had to,really. Not due to nerves,& I love Motorway driving, just that its never cropped up as a necessity before. Still,if the daughter goes to this Uni,it will be a regular. Its only 5 miles from Whitstable,so I can see us taking a fair few beach days out to visit her
The Dogmother
Ahhh, I see. I hope you don't get too many points I have a friend who has been driving for 20 years but will NEVER drive on motorways, she plans her route to only take A roads... makes life very difficult for her Most of the M25 is very speed restricted, as is the A40 (Westway) heading into London.
