Litter - time for action

Recommended Posts

I am so sick of the amount of litter along the A38 on my drive home I am going to clear it up myself.

Before I do who would be responsible for keeping this clear is it local or county council? I want to ask the question before I get arrested.

The Highways Agency, i would think.

Please, please, please, please, please be careful if you do intend to go and pick up litter, that road is a very busy dual carriageway and is an incredibly dangerous place to be as a pedestrian, even if you are on the verge.

I would make a formal complaint, if I were you, before putting yourself at very real risk?

Take care!

Isn't is annoying. Someone has driven to our local byway and dumped 3 black bags of kitchen waste  Why on earth couldn't they drive to the tip  We have phone the council to sort it out. I am rather hoping that they go through it to see if they can find anything that shows who it might belong to.

Hope they do then it might go some way to preventing such stupidity.

Thanks I will contact them and wait for a response but it makes me so very angry the way people treat our country and I feel ashamed for anyone visiting the area. We are supposed to be a tourist destination.

I feel so strongly I shall get together a group of people (I can't be the only one) and get the A38 shut while we do it! Perhaps that will make drivers and fly tippers think twice before making such a mess.

I will wait for a response first. :D

Being in construction, we have loads of hi viz jackets here

Is there room on yer soapbox for me Plum? This is one of my ongoing rants too, especially as people drink in our park at night and leave it strewn with bottles, cans and discarded takeaways. I have the devil of a a job keeping two lurchers out of them  It's not as if there aren't any bins, plus they have to detail one of the gardeners to go around on weekend mornings picking it all up. I walk around picking up anything near a bin and lobbing it in.

Our local council have a hotline that you can call or email to report rubbish, broken glass etc. They are usually out within 48 hours to sort it out.

I'm a litter picker too because it makes me so cross, I have to do something about it. I've only done it locally on B and unclassified roads though, so I don't bother asking if I could or should. I just gather my empty compost bags, donn some thick gloves and mutter lots of expletives while I get on with it. I hope that car drivers would be shamed watching me clear up after them, but sadly not. It makes me feel better though!

Oh good Clare I can count on you and your jacket then

Had a reply and it's our borough council that are responsible so will see what response I get from them.

Sat behind someone at traffic lights who was throwing litter out of their car the other day only thing that stopped me throwing it back in was my nurses uniform

Well done Jools

There's a big junction I go through every day where there are signs up telling you how many people have been fined for dropping cigarette ends out of the car, it's a chalkboard so is updated regularly

Good luck with the litter picking :)

Plum,

Please contact Keep Britain Tidy, http://www.keepbritaintidy.org/ they are the organisation tasked with the responsibility for this sort of thing. What's more they have a number of campaigns such as 'Love where you Live' that local people can get involved in - they also have resources you need to get others involved in your campaign. They love local activists, as would the government - Big Society in action!

Go you!

That is SUCH a great idea - it annoys me too.

Thanks Chickennutter I have registered and will post event on there when I know I am going ahead depending on Amber Valley's response. It's very good they help you with arranging things and resources and how to risk assess the activity and possibly other volunteers.

I also had some advice from the local litter picking group.

Feel better now I'm doing something rather than just seething every night coming home for 2 years. Why have I just moaned up to now!

Sadly there are too many thoughtless people in Britain now!

That said, I feel quite pleased with myself because on Sunday, a parked taxi in my street opened his door and dumped a drink carton on the floor. My girlfriend and I scowled at him (hen style) so much that he got out and put it in a nearby skip. A small victory but a victory nontheless...

I think the Community Service people do that here so quite regular sessions of litter picking done! But some don't look like they've been naughty, as some are little old men that we see often, so must be their job with the occasional "helpers". We have a section of woods that someone is always fly tipping in - or someones - big things. And in Greywell someone has chucked a computer screen in a tree!!!!

Just before Xmas I followed a white van onto our estate, he parked up on the road near my drive and started to empty the contents of his filthy cab onto the grass verge. As I approched him he just started to swear at me. I had to leave as I had my daughter with me and I didn't feel safe but what I did do was to take his detail off the side of the van and reg. I sent a letter to the conpany he was driving for and gave the info to the local CPO. Didn't hear anything back from either of them.

It only took a few moments to put his rubbish in the bin. He was just bl**dy lucky DD was with me or there would have been trouble.

We have a regular dog walk in some nearby woodland. When we were there a couple of weeks ago we saw a white van and a pile of builders rubble which we photographed and sent to the local authority. I don't know the outcome but I hope they're prosecuting him.
