Another forum ( I know I feel like I'm cheating on you all  ) has suggested feeding non medicated chick crumb, but giving coxoid as a routine even if there is no sign of the disease.

I want to feed my chicks (assuming they hatch) the garvo chick feed which isn't medicated, so I was wondering if anyone else had used this approach.

It's the approach I was advised to take. Mine are on non medicated crumb. I shall put some oregano in it too and then when they are 5/6 weeks give them some coxoid.

That's what I've read too Karlotta which is why I prefer medicated chick crumb. I do have a bottle of Coxoid in the emergency cupboard as I had an outbreak in my LF group last year, but I haven't used it yet. I used Herban instead to combat it (advised by Retford Poultry Vets) and it did the trick (with all but the two I subsequently lost to Mareks).

I think that if I couldn't get medicated crumb, then I'd give a higher dose of Herban as a precaution and only use the Coxoid if there were any symptoms. I do however know that a lot of experienced breeders do recommend Coxoid, so I guess it's up to the individual to call. :?

I've used it routinely but early on - days 2-8 but mainly because I couldnt get good quality medicated chick crumb locally

I now use the medicated crumb that is available and just accept that I can move them on to my preferred brand of feed at 4 weeks after the worst danger period has passed, the Coxoid is good but I was getting through a fair bit!

Prevention is always better than cure and damp bedding causes most of the problems but I have been unlucky in the past and wont risk it now

If you cant get medicated crumb or wont use a full sack then do consider the Coxoid, it wont have any effect on the chicks development but is a little rough on their tummy so some Avipro or Lifeguard in the water for the following few days will help
