Duncan08
My girls live in the run at the moment, we are landscaping the garden at the moment and they will get a Free Range area sorted out, but for now they just come out for cuddles! My Bluebell wants to get on things. They have a few logs scattered about, and there is an old tree stump, but its a bit spiky not good for standing on, but she tries to climb on top of the feeders and hang on to the glugs. So, I am thinking that she might like a perch. Any suggestions on how to rig something up? Thanks
Ain't Nobody Here
Old garden bench? I have one in my WIR . Look for large cut up logs of different heights - I have 3 in my run and they make a kind of stairway up to the bench for my older ladies! Duncan08
WOW - Your Run is amazing - Chicken Heaven. Ours our still confined to the Go run, with a couple of extensions at the moment until we sort out the rest of the garden. So a bench would be a little bit out of the question. I could certainly secure some branches between the mesh, which would give them a perch. Very envious of the run, and with the water collection too! Thank You, Sue
Ain't Nobody Here
Ikea shoe racks work well in the Classic run - not sure about the Go run but can't imagine it would be that different! This was my setup before moving to a WIR .
peckingham palace
Just love your run, can you come round and design one for me! You have thought of everything.
Ain't Nobody Here
Aww, shucks . Thank you . It's actually looking very slightly different now - I was planning on a new thread "What I would do differently" so watch this space .
Duncan08
Did you make it yourself? I read the fox thread while I was eating my lunch which has actually put me off letting the girls wander about on their own. I see foxes often whilst out walking the dog and I dont want to offer up a tasty lunch. Looking at the girls in their run I do want to give them more space though, I know they are thoroughly spoilt and they have loads more space than thousands of other chickens, but it just feels a bit mean. Yours looks great though, I love all of the different levels you do seem to have thought of everything, I wouold be very interested to hear what you would have done differently, it looks pretty perfect to me! I think so too, I am very jealous and instead of getting on with my work I am whiling away the afternoon searching for a suitable WIR for my girls, my hubby will have apoplexy! beach chick
poles/branches/broom handles through the wire or across the corners work a treat. we made an a-frame from some offcuts from a cheap wardrobe unit we were getting rid off - basically 2 slatted shelves fixed together to make the A. Ain't Nobody Here
Did you make it yourself? I wish I could say yes but it was actually from Aviaries4u and a friend's husband put it together for me . I was only responsible for the interior design (and the design of the run itself) . I've started that new thread here .
Duncan08
Thank you for the suggestions. I have added a few logs and some batons just suspended through the wire, they have been a resounding success. Although, the young lady I thought was desparate to climb hasn't bothered with them at all and the other three love them! My understanding of chicken speak obvioulsy isnt as good as i thought
craftyhunnypie
Hubby's girls have lots of trees & branches in their enclosure. He also put an old bike in there which they absolutely love to sit on. He sort of semi buried it in the ground, so that it stands up properly. Emma.x
Plum
Wow brilliant love the idea
Ain't Nobody Here
That's a great idea - we need a photo though . I'm getting a bench from work tomorrow which has only one seat slat but will be perfect in the girls' freerange area .
Plum
You can always get a few lengths of timber to replace them, then you'll have somewhere to sit with them. Mine came from the tip with a rotten slat and the girls can't really tell the old from new.
Ain't Nobody Here
I'm thinking only one slat means less poop .
bouldercroft
I've added a perch in the upper corner of my WIR - it's a fallen branch from one of the trees and the girls love it. We also have a lower perch that is made from fallen branches with tripod like legs at each end - again fallen branches. A friend calls my WIR a McDonalds Playland for chickens photo by jewilk71, on Flickr
Fran A
We have tree branches in ours from a tree that we cut down last year, also a large planter full of soil that they like to perch on the edge of and dust bath in the middle of
Plum
Those branches look good much better than my offcuts. Anyway a selection of my perches. Ikea wooden stool, reformed picket lawn edging, piece of 1x1/2", gym made from a pallet, etc.,
beach chick
Plum it looks as if your girls appreciate your efforts! mine just ignore most things, although they must use them before I let them out in the mornings as there is definitely enough poo on them... I'd just like to see them perching!
