emmastar
Hello all . I realy want an eglu or cube but not to sure which to get . I have 7 silkie eggs in a bator at the moment , but a friend has said if i get a good hatch he will take the extras in for me as he has a large pen . So i can get a eglu but at the moment im wondering if i should just get the cube incase i want to get more hens in the long run ! How many people have needed to upgrade after starting out ? Sam
I wish I bought a cube!! I only have 4 chickens but would love to get more, hence why I want a cube. It would be cheaper to buy a cube first of all! But you'll love whatever you get; the eglu is great!
emmastar
I do like the look of the postbox red cubes , I think i would be happy if i went with an eglu but i also think after a while i would have 2 in the garden Not planing to get one till the end of the month now as thats when i next get payed so another 20 odd days to think about it and at the same time see how the hatch goes . Chicken shack
I bought my cube last year as the garden space it takes up is not alot more than an eglu. I have a 4 mtr run. However now Omlet have introduced the WIR I would go for a Go or Eglu with the WIR. You can either have it attached to the out side of the WIR or for added secutity put it inside on a platform. You can add section to the WIR as and when you can afford it and also add another Go/Eglu I think the cost is comparable.
emmastar
Ty i will have a look at the walk in run now i like the idea of that for cleaning i do think i will get more hens ive not got them yet and have been at looking at what i can keep in what lol . fluffy chick
Personally I would go for an eglu, then if you want more hens get another one. This would mean 2 flocks and less introductions (I have just vowed no more intros for me!!) it also gives you more flexibility as you could still have one big flock if you prefer and have them like bunk beds! However some people would say for for the cube if you can afford it, you can start off with more hens and is easier to clean that 2 eglus. emmastar
Lol i could make use for it lol i do think the wir idea is good and as i have chosen silkies they dont mix well with other breeds so i may get another clasic to add another type too . Duncan08
We got a Go with a run extension at the end of March with 2 chooks. A week later we had another 2 chooks and another extension! Now I keep looking for cubes on ebay (can't afford a new one(actually can't afford a second hand one either )) But can't help looking..... We have 4 hybrids, pepperpot, gingernut, white star and a bluebell. I didn't realise that their life expectancy was so short and would love to add a couple of purebreeds. Even after the trauma of intros. With hindsight I should have gone for the cube
mollyripkim
Same here, bought a Go last year which I love but have just got a cube so I could have more girls so in hindsight that would have been a better buy but I didn't,t realise how hooked I would get. emmastar
I think if i saved up i could get a cube as i will have the remaining time in the inky and then the time before they go outside so quite a few weeks still , Wish i had 500 now as there is some nice preloved cubes about
Tutti Frutti
Yup, I had to upgrade - several times! That (and buying 2nd hand) was the only way I could afford to work up to a cube I started with 3 girls in a wooden house but REALLY wanted a classic! Santa brought me one for my 2nd batch of girls (bald BHWT girls hence the excuse to pamper them)! Then for my next newbies, I got a chewed one cheap on ebay but, after merging them, I found 6 in one and one in the other so that was it, I wanted a cube. I was lucky that I found someone here on the forum who wanted to downsize to a classic so I p-ex'ed with cash I nearly sold the damaged classic to fund it - but glad I didn't as my chicks are in it now Good luck - be patient and the right deal will turn up
Purplemaniacs
I have two and a . I prefer the eglus, I find the cube a pain to clean out, I think it maybe because I am only little (5' on a good day ) I think it maybe easier if you are taller, I am almost in it to reach the far side. The eglu is just a great piece of design I think. I have not had a Go but having seen one I don't think I would go for one of those. I am sure you will love which ever one you decide on. Chrissie I'm exactly the opposite - much prefer cleaning one cube to one (or two) eglus! love the look of the eglu, and in fact prefer it to the cube, but too much bending and hefting about, I find the cube much easier - and I'm only 5'4". Interesting, perhaps 4" makes a difference, OH who is over 6' said he might try cleaning it out next time to see what he thinks I'm not going to complain I will get a clean cube with no effort on my part and if he says its no problem he could be gaining a regular job . emmastar
Lol im also only 5ft but i still like the look of both and i do think the cube will give me more choice but then the eglu would also with 2 !!!!!!
Purplemaniacs
If you think you will get the morehens bug then the cube is probably the way to go. If I was just having three or four hens I would choose the eglu but once you get the chook keeping bug 3 or 4 is never enough Chrissie
karlotta
I went for a cube straight away as I knew I wouldn't be happy with just a couple! But having said that, within a month I'd bought my first classic (ebay) for some pekins so I'm sure either way wouldn't be a waste!
Tutti Frutti
Having just spent all afternoon deep cleaning the cube (with Total Mite Kill - prevention is better than cure!), it's reminded me of a huge benefit of the Classic! It's small, relatively light, comes apart easily into just a few bits without needing screwdrivers, and can be carried by myself so I don't need any help cleaning it - unlike the cube which is none of the above But a benefit of the cube is... the rectangular poo trays which I find much easier to empty than Classic ones with their corners... I always end up with poo on my feet

It will last forever and is kept clean much easier than my old wooden coop. In my opinion they look nicer too, like a wee work of art! Truth is I can't ever see myself without chickens now so I may as well buy a coop to last. Or maybe two coops to last ....
