It could be the fence and not you using the land thats the problem

 

Sometimes people just dont like seeing something changed and a new fence sticks out like a sore thumb

 

They may actually be happy for you to use the land in return for keeping it maintained

Nope,Fraid not.

The letter states that they have no interest in selling or renting the land, nor do they ever want it used as a garden.

 

They would obviously rather see it left as ugly scrub land,endangering our power lines.

Just updating this ,as we have heard today that we have lost the claim & have to move the fence by the middle of January

 

As our solicitor has said,it was well worth a try,but the interference by a couple villagers who have kept on at the Land Claims people & the Estate has gone against us.

Sadly one of these people is the husband of a woman I was once very friendly with.

 

As I mentioned before,I was never really 100% happy with my husband putting the fence there to begin with,but the whole experience has left a very sour taste in my mouth...in fact I would be happy just to move now.

Oh that's a shame, it does seem a bit petty of someone from your village to complain. We had a small strip of a couple of feet behind our old house, some of our neighbours had taken it and some hadn't. I was worried about taking it so we didn't bother in the end.

 

Try not to let it worry you, and don't let it put you off of your house.

I have settled down a bit now & am feeling better about it all.

We needed a new fence anyhow,so we will just move it to where it should be & have a nice private garden once more.

I'd do the opposite, and be very warm and friendly, that'll throw 'em

I would go up and chattily moan about how some mean person put the kibosh on your claim and how much work your OH put into it and what a hassle/expense you're going to have .

 

Might be worth it just to see them squirm .

What a shame

I think you need to keep an eye on that piece of land and send in regular letters of complaint to the 'owners' about it's lack of maintenance and how it is an eyesore (copied to the council of course ) and demanding to know what they are going to do about it?

You never know, they may be glad to see the back of it one day

Thing is,its still not owned by anyone,at least no one has a definitive claim on it.

We will probably never know.......its just an overgrown verge running alongside a bridal path,that the fence did not encroach on to despite what the people down the lane say.

 

We know who it was who complained btw,as they sent us a letter & the Land Registry told us too.

They also complained about a bonfire that we didn't have,and have been busy bad mouthing us in the village. A good friend & neighbour is also on the council & has told us all.....

My mum lives on a corner of her street and behind her house there was a large grass verge almost 20 ft before the pavement. The council offered this land to my mum and the 8ft verge at the front and down the side of the house for £3000 a few years ago. She bought it and extended the house and has a nice conservatory and summer house in the garden. I know it isn't land claim but i thought it was pretty decent of the council to offer it to mum.

They were wanting to reduce the borough gardening costs and homes adjoining these large areas were being given the chance to buy them. Best thing my mum did she loves gardening even at 78 yrs young.

During the war, my grandfolks were 'given' the common land next to their smallholding to extend into and use for livestock and veggies etc. Unfortunately the council wanted it back afterwards It was about 6 acres from memory.
