CharLeila
Hi, had my first loss today. Hilda took herself off to the nesting box, made herself comfy and quietly slipped away . I decided to man up and double bagged her, not the easiest thing to do! The question is, do I buy another one to introduce to my 3 others or would it be best to wait unitl I loose another and introduce 2 new girls to 2 existing? percy049
so sorry to your loss. It will be better to introduce 2 v 2. You should never introduce only 1, as they will be very badly picked on
gongladosh
Sorry to hear it. I'd definitely introduce 2 if at all possible.
CharLeila
I thought the introduction of 2 would be the answer. The next question is do I now go and find another 2 or wait? My run doesn't look right with only 3 girls!

Lavenders_Blue
Does anyone know where to buy some nice girls near Peterborough? Cheers Try Westaway Poultry in Wing (Rutland). I'm not sure how up to date the website is, try ringing to find out what birds he has in stock. He has a good reputation.
CharLeila
Great, thanks. Think I will try Westaway first as it is only up the road. Will let you know how it goes. The plan is to come home with 2 on Saturday. Today will consist of chicken introduction research!
Purplemaniacs
Sorry to hear about Hilda. I agree with the others introduce two. Do you have any seperate accomadation? Chrissie
CharLeila
I dont really have seperate accomodaton but I can seperate my run with some chicken wire I have. What would you suggest with regards to accom? would I need somewhere seperate for them to sleep too? Just spoken to Bob at Westaway and he has about 100 hens at POL ranging from £12.50 - £15.00. Sounds like a good price. Will let you know what we come home with. Any recommendations?

counturchickens
Maybe get some ex batts, a bit of tlc and they are perfect!
lindafw
I am fortunate to have a big garden... introductions are done by putting new hens in a cobbled together pen for the day of purchase then when the others are asleep I lift my newbies into the coop..following morning I let them out and all is ok.....maybe I have been lucky
CharLeila
Wow, how easy do you make that sound! I've managed to borrow a cat carrier thing to use but I't might be too small. Possibly getting a Blue Orpington! Think I'll do the same as you, lindafw. Will let you know what happens tomorrow morning.
