Luvachicken
After much thinking about what to do with my girlies, who had been poorly with different things to each other, I decided they should take no more. Poor Matilda's limp had become progressively worse and it meant that she couldn't scratch herself properly or dig anymore. It was painful to watch her hobbling along and I couldn't let her suffer anymore. And Charlotte took a turn for the worse today and was almost collapsing as she tried to walk. It was an extremely hard decision to have them both put down at the same time but I could bear their suffering no more. They both just seemed to exist for the last few days .............such a hard day , I can't believe what I've done.
lindafw
hugs You have done the right thing. Its THE most important thing when taking on animals ..being prepared to be responsible for the end of their life.... our love an care MUST extend to kindly ending their days so they don't suffer. I know its sad and you are feeling their loss but strange to say...well done you Linda
sparkysmum
Hello, Whilst I don't know the history behind your ladies becoming ill, I do know that if their quality of life had become poor/compromised then you absolutely did do the right thing in having them humanely pts. I recently had one of my lovely sablepoots pts as she had a progressive neurological condition which meant that "the end" was just around the corner. I wanted her to have a few more days but it was dreadful & the following day our kindly vet gently put her to sleep. It was the only responsible thing to do for us and the vet. Although we wept buckets it was a relief when it was over. We had done all we could & I'm sure you have too. Tomorrow you will feel better knowing they are at peace now. Take care, Alli xx
witzend
how awful for you - I'm SO sorry - it's horrible when any pet gets to that point but you HAVE done the right thing - no more suffering xx
dancing cloud
Lots of ((hugs)) to you and yours. It's a horrible decision to make (been there, done that) and, when you love your girls, the hardest thing to do, but it is the right and only thing you can do. Two of mine died within 12hrs of each other recently (1 pts and 1 just died) and I was distraught . Feel free to cry your eyes out, and just know you were a loving and responsible chook-mummy. Chortle Chook
What a horrible thing to have to do on this lovely, sunny day. I so agree with lindafw . In a way well done you. Big hug.
Luvachicken
Thanks everyone for your wishes, they are much appreciated. I think it has been one of the hardest things I've ever done, but I know that they are not suffering anymore. The worst thing is that while I was cooking tea there was no chickens to watch it's so empty in their little play area. And I nearly cooked too much peas and sweetcorn like I normally do. Even my daughter, who wasn't that keen on my girlies, looked up to see what they were doing a bit later...
Henhathnofury
Oh you poor thing. You did the best for your girls. Think of them and all the funny things they used to do. You will shed some tears but the smiles will come as well.
WitchHazel
What a sad day. You did the right thing. It's always easier to let things go on. Making the decision can be very hard - and it definitely sounds right in your case

Luvachicken
Hubby says as I'm so upset and it's upsetting me seeing an empty cage, he said I can get some more chickens. But should I do it already ? I was thinking of bantam wyandottes, but don't know where to start - or even if want to
lindafw
You will know if and when you are ready and when you want to go chook shopping. It could be tomorrow or next week or next month....it will be up to you. I couldn't see my garden without some living ornaments. When you are ready I am sure there are many here who can advise you on breeds and suppliers. My hens now number 10 and I am still wondering if anyone would notice another one or two
Plum
So sorry You go and get some more. It won't lessen the loss of your other girls but it'll be the start of a whole new chicken adventure for some lucky girls.

Luvachicken
Thanks Plum, I have been looking into some Wyandotte bantams. I think last night was hard because when we took our dog for a walk a saw a lovely log and straight away I said "oo, lets take that home for the girlies" and hubby said "there not there, silly" And, I so almost went to lock their bedroom door. Everything is so automatic..... And then I phoned my mum and told her, and then my sister sent me a text to say how I did the right thing.......but I will get some more. I didn't think I would be that upset by it all but it has taken me by surprise how attatched to them I was. Thanks to everyone for your wishes xxxx
