fujcube
Hi all, Found this in the nest box yesterday! I suspect it was made by our Cream Legbar who has not laid an egg in a very long time. She goes through all the motions of laying and sits for a good half hour. Then gets up, has a quick look, then that's it until the next day!! If anyone has any thought on why she sits but doesn't lay, I'd be interested to hear them.
Daphne
Is that real You've not been photoshopping? Or making blue torpedoes out of modelling clay? Given the shape of the egg she might be an older girl who lays irregularly or who is coming to the end of lay, or she may have some internal issue. I would guess she goes into lay but something is stopping her lay 'normally' (eg age/illness or maybe some stressor) so an egg is not produced. BarbaraJ
It looks like a giant liquorice torpedo I don't know why she laid that but i do get longer eggs sometimes

Ain't Nobody Here
Wow, never seen one quite that long before . My non-laying girls often sit on the nestbox . I think they feel left out if they don't .
daxigirl
Holy Cow !!! That must have been a surprise when you opened the hatch. Moomin my CC Legbar (who also goes and sits in the nest box as if she's got one brewing but doesn't do anything) did her first egg for a fortnight today. Yay. Nowhere near as impressive as the torpedo though. She always has skiddies down her fluff, is a squishy pooper and erratic layer, so I took her to the chicken vet to see if there was anything to be done. He recommended Beryl's which we tried but nothing's changed so tomorrow I'm going to pick up some penecillin to see if that helps. He said it may be just the way she's made. (Washed and trimmed her fluff yesterday so maybe that encouraged her to make a production. Funny how kitchen brochures never show this kind of activity, wonder why??) fujcube
She is almost 2 years old now and has probably laid 2 dozen eggs or so since she started laying. She's quite a character so there is no question of getting rid of her because she doesn't lay.
poppy ben grace
You should sell that picture to a newspaper, someone would make a story out of it and make you a bit of money at the same time!
