craftyhunnypie
Hi everyone - speaking to you all whilst on holiday in the caravan. I was in bicester oxfordshire, but now in ross on wye. I visited cotswold chickens the other day - it was hard to walk away chickenless! Today has been my greatest day, as I have ordered my CUBE! I went on the internet at the library. I am now on the forum on my mda gadget, but it's hard going. Guess what colour cube I have ordered? . . . . . . . ORANGE I love retro! So now I have to wait for the omlet delivery phonecall. plus I need an orange cube in my signature. can anyone help with the little picture in orange? Iwon't sleep now until it arrives & then I will sleep in the garden. Emma.x
Jill
Congratulations! I ordered a cube earlier this month and it is coming mid June - only a wait of 5 weeks - so you shouldn't have to wait too long. Exciting isn't it. (Mine is a purple one, to go with my yellow eglu)
Karen & co.
How is that!!! Hope you manage to get some sleep whilst you wait karen x
feemcg
Emma, theres a thread further down 'getting the cube in your signature' and AnnieP put an orange one on there for us to copy and paste - I tried doing it and failed miserably but will try again once my cube arrives (I think its tempting fate to put it on prematurely ). Jaime
Hi Emma, they only construct the cube if you've ordered chooks as well - it's worth getting at least one newby as it the cube is fiddly to put together (although straight forward) Congratulations Jxx
Gallina
I thought that ordering just one hen from Omlet looked too obvious a trick, so I ordered two. I just stuffed them in the empty Eglu set-up and spent the first 24 hours admiring the cube. But I am getting to like them very much now, and they are in the cube with the others. I think that with good instructions I could have put the cube together, but it would have ruined a weekend: I am very slow. Also I don't have any tools other than a screwdriver, and just one hole in not quite the right place would have finished me off. It took Johannes an hour and a half to my cube + extension together, and he is an expert! So if you don't like DIY get a hen!
Jill
Me too Gallina I had not planned to get any chickens but could not face putting the cube together by myself. I had really wanted to get a Bluebelle but anyway I know I will love them when they come. It sounds as if you have integrated them really quickly. I thought I would put the newbies in the eglu for a few days and let them free range together before putting them all in the cube. It is always easier to add two than one I think. That will give me 5 in the cube (still room for a Bluebelle ). I see you have also got the extension - I am getting it too. I like the idea of them having plenty of room if I am not around and they can't free range. Are you pleased with the size?
Gallina
At the moment I have five hens in the Cube (with extended run), and there is plenty of room in the Cube for another five (or even more if I could let them out more often). It took ten days before the new pair went in with the three old ones: they grew a lot in that time and got a lot cheekier, and I felt that they could cope. They were very pale and timid when they first arrived, and so small. The only problem has been feeding. The new ones at first were kept back by my old monsters, who stood breast-to-breast in the way of the food area, so I had to crawl in to put extra feeders in the back. This only took a few days to resolve, and they all feed at the front now. But for a very short period you need at least four sets of food and two sets of water: I am not joking! I now have in the Eglu two of the gentlest hens you have ever seen (a Bluebelle and Amber Star). They are so small they still cheep, and I am not risking putting them in with the thugs yet. It's great having two places to keep hens.
The Dogmother
Great news Emma! Gallina - glad to hear that your newbies are integrating. Have you tried a galvanised trough feeder like mine? Excellent for feeding a few birds (they can all get round it) and easy to clean too. Like this one, although a lot cheaper http://www.countryfayre-countrystore.co.uk/shop.php/feeders-and-drinkers/feeders/galvanised-torbay-trough-12-x-5-x-3-/p_249.html?PHPSESSID=a08087804b9a23cc6db87ba76f6695bf Sorry, site won't let me access the picture to post it here. Gallina
I am waiting for my automatic feeder and my nipple drinker to arrive before I make any decisions about whether I need a trough as well. I may get one if I get even more hens, as it would be just one container to bring it at night. (I have to confess I haven't been bringing in the feeders at the far end: the rats haven't got into the Cube run yet, and it will be easier to spot their attempts.) The Dogmother
I ditched the grub altogether as it just encouraged the hensd to bully each other as they were fighting over such a small space to feed. This trough stays dry under the IKEA rain cover.
Jaime
I am waiting for my automatic feeder and my nipple drinker to arrive before I make any decisions about whether I need a trough as well. There is no mention of the new feeders in my literature..... do we just wait and hope it arrives at some point. I'm guessing that Omlet have a list of us that require them as part of our Cube package
Gallina
I was assured verbally by Johannes that the proper feeders would be sent on to me later (I am assuming here that no one has them yet). I said "Can I keep the purple Glug & Grub as well?", and of course he said yes, so I felt I had done rather well. Does your literature include assembly instructions? In the unlikely event that I want to sell my Cube, I won't have any instructions, as they weren't produced when mine was delivered. And do you have instructions on how to use the cube? I am too frightened to try to take the back off for cleaning in case I can't get it back on again.
The Dogmother
It might be a good idea to ask Jan at Omlet for the 'destructions' when they get them in. I undrestand that there are two release catches for the roof so that you can lift it off. Well, that's how it's been on the ones I have seen.
Gallina
I can slide the roof back easily. But it is not possible to get the roosting bars out to clean them unless you remove the back as well (unless someone else knows otherwise). I am so scared of not being able to put it together that I do what I can without taking the bars out.
The Dogmother
Oh dear, shall I bring my tool kit over?
Jaime
The back of the cube comes off really easy. Once you have slid the roof forward look inside and there are two identical sliding bolts on the inside of the grey/back part. when you release these the back just lifts off It's much lighter than lifting the top off the MK2 Eglu
ubereglu
What great news! I saw the orange display one today and it's a fab colour-a bit too bright for our garden though!
