Teenagers and laundry

Recommended Posts

Having (I think) sorted the problem of dirty laundry i.e. if it stayed on her bedroom floor and didn't make it to the laundry basket, then it didn't get washed = no clean clothes to wear.

We now have another problem... she had a 'Superdry' T Shirt with a sort of flock logo on the front, she pointed out to me that it shouldn't be tumble dried (not too much of a problem as it's summer and I try to line dry if I can) I said at the time that she should put it out separately so that I know and don't put it in the dryer... well you can guess what happened  she put it in the laundry basket and I sorted it all into colour piles.. it rained, I tumble dried and the t shirt is now 'ruined'

My fault of course. :?

of course it's your fault - you're the Mother and therefore your place is in the Wrong

I have no answer to this, and also have the 'if it's not in the laundry basket it won't get washed' routine, still doesnt stop them from insisting they had put it in there in the first place.

I shall be watching with interest to see if there is a solution!

You will do nothing right for at least the next 6 years Clare

I put the eldests new mug that her boyfriend bought her in the dishwasher last week, & its not dishwasher proof.

She had had washed it,but put it to dry in the same place the dirty stuff ready to go into the dishwasher goes,& it got picked up & put in....all the pattern came off of course,& its my fault.

My daughters were doing their own laundry from the age of 15

I just got sick of washing and ironing things that I never even saw them wear, they used to grab clean clothes out of the wardrobe, put them on and then decide not to wear them and just drop them on the floor because they were too lazy to hang them back up. Sure they made a few mistakes and ruined a couple of things but at least they could use a washing machine by the time they left home

We have the if it's not in the laundry bin it doesn't get washed rule here to. Mine will both put a load on though if they get desperate. It's more the putting it away afterwards they struggle with. I agree with the others, if Rosie has clothes that need special care she should deal with them herself and be grateful you do the rest for her.

If she has clothes that require a different sort of wash (no tumble dry, different temperature etc) tell her to wash those herself, then she has only herself to blame when it goes wrong

I have to agree.......and if she's buying some of her own clothes then she'll soon learn to read the labels :)

My 3 kids are still at home 24, 21 and 20 and they have (or decided not to :lol: namely my son) do their own washing since about 15/16. If they forget to do something or ruin something they have only themselves to blame  I will hang washing out if they ask but they don't presume as I'm busy with the kids i mind all day.

I can't quite get my head around people doing their own laundry,I am afraid.

It makes life easier for us to put it all in one of the pull-out wash basket things we have,& for me to do it on a daily basis......I am sure its cheaper that way too,as there are no loads which are not full loads.

I can see the benefit of teens doing their own,but it wouldn't work for me (control freak, probably  )

 Don't worry, she knows perfectly well how to use the washing machine, however as there are just the two of us (although we generate lots of sports gear) there's little point in her doing her won stuff - that would just use more water and electricity. I have told her though that next week she will sort the washing, load the machine, take it out and hang it. Perhaps then she will realise that when you're scrambling to get a load in before you rush out to work/school, that checking that someone else has got it right is the last thing on your mind.

Ruddy t shirt

I am 100% with you Cinnamon on this one! and you can guarantee that their stuff would be festering in the machine when you wanted to use it anyway...

Ditto here too  But I do make sure they put their clothes in for wash. I do not pick up after them :notalk: unless I am feeling charitable

The lovely Hazel's floor is 6" deep in clothes, towels, underwear, everything. You know what? She hasn't a care in the world :!: I've even known her to pinch my knickers (gross) because her own are under piles on her floor.I used to do her room everyday but not anymore. I keep hoping that maybe one day she'll get the message

Ditto to that.

Cleos prom dress needs the straps shortening,Prom is tomorrow and I still haven't had it.

I have a strict laundry regime that the girls know: Mutt Monday (dog bedding),Towels Tuesday,Whites Wednesday,Sheets Sunday. Colours go in every day. So if they don't get that special white top in the basket on time, they have to wait another week!

It didn't take them long to catch on at all. 8)

Mine have a habit of getting home on a Friday evening and filling the laundry basket with a weeks worth of clothes off their floors. My DS would quite happily wear clothes until they rotted off his body :vom: but the girls do have a clear out once a week. I ask DS to put his washing in the basket and he does some of it but I end up with 10 odd socks and only a couple of pairs of undies with the rest in nooks and cranies all over his room :x

My ES is a bit of a scoop and drop lad, once or twice a week he puts a massive pile of clothes into the laundry bin (he's an air conditioning engineer so can get very dirty). Sometimes clean clothes that he's not bothered to put away land back up in the laundry bin but I just put them back into his wardrobe - his fault for not putting them away in the first place!

I do all the washing although DD does sometimes put a load on if she needs extra stuff to go away etc. I'm going to teach the boys how to do the washing but I think its more economical if I carry on doing it myself mostly (and yes I can be a control freak)
