Rat poison?? urgent question

Recommended Posts

what does it look like? reason I ask is that my dog, Ozzie, is in the vet hosp on a drip. they have just done bloods and he is VERY anaemic - 17% red blood cells instead of a minimum of 35%. very worried about him. :(

anyway, we dont use anything like that, I dont even use slug pellets for heaven's sake!! but just wondering if a neighbour might have put some out in the field, thinking that the chooks were bringing rats (which I dont think they are, I'm out there all hours of the day and night and I've never seen one).

the thing is, I dont know what to look for - would it be in some kind of a box? or just scattered about? pellets or powder or what? any particular colour? thank you if you can help.

Oh no! I hope he'll be okay. The one we use is blue pellets like these but you can also get grains that have been treated. Ours are in a locked box that the rats go into, but I think some people might scatter them about, which I feel is a bit silly as you have no idea what will eat them. I really hope he'll pull through (((hugs)))

I am so sorry to hear this. Wishing Ozzie a full and fast recovery

I've never used rat poison so can't say for sure, I've done a google search and a lot of the pellets seems to be a turquoise / green colour - I don't know if it varies by manufacturer though? I thought you had bait boxes but some people may use it loose?

I'm so sorry to hear this and I really hope your boy picks up, I would be beside myself if that was my boy. Big hugs to you.xx

thanks, I have been and had a look, cant see anything but its difficult - all quite overgrown, brambles, nettle etc. mr beach chick thinks it unlikely, but there is one person who has complained that her cat 'comes in smelling as if he's slept in the midden' which I think must be a reference to chickens. on the other hand as we recently had some trees chopped to suit her I hope she wouldnt do anything like that.

am very anxious I have to say but prob wont hear anything for another 3 or 4 hours. got everything crossed

When the council rat man set poison here, he used several 'large' blocks (1cm x 4cm x 5cm (ish) if I recall correctly). The poison was specific to rats and not supposed to harm any other animals (we mentioned chicken, hedgehogs, wild birds).

BUT I guess there are different kinds.

Hope he recovers soon, H

It can take a few forms, coloured granules or grain (sometimes in bags sometimes loose) or coloured blocks, its usually red, blue or green

Properly used it should be in proper bait boxes or bait tubes, sometimes people put it in a bit of drainpipe, push it down burrows (bags or blocks not loose) or behind wood leant against a wall or fence

I hope your dog recovers :(

Oh no I hope Ozzie will be ok :-(

Rat poison is usually warfarin (anti-clotting agent), which I presume would show up on a blood test. I believe it takes a few days to work so it would be hard to know where he picked it up from if indeed that is the cause. I hope the vet is able to find out what's wrong and wish him a speedy recovery xx
