sadietoo
As you may have read, sadly I lost my darling Goldline yesterday, and whilst this seems a bit heartless, I now have one little girlie on her own, and an empty cube, and an eglu...and so I need to get cracking on replacing my flock. I will get three new girls I am not keen to have another hybrid...I'd like a girl who takes a bit of time off for herself...essentially these are pets first and providers of the best ever eggs second.... I have given each of my family the choice of one hen... my husband fancies a Maran, my son a Silkie, and my daughter a Barnevelder...we already have a Light Sussex (my very special girlie ) ...so will this work as a mix...are the Maran and Barnevelder laid back enough not to pick on either the Silkie or my Light Sussex who is an extremely quiet and sensitive soul.... OK next question..any ideas for sourcing above breeds in West Sussex/Hants/ Surrey areas...I will try GoldenValleyPoultry, my Goldline came from there and I was very impressed, but any other suggestions also welcolmed... Thanks as ever for reading....x
KimmyCustard
Sadie We went to Hook Farm (HookFarm.net) and saw Alison, very helpful and loads of choice! We got 5 hybrids but they sell pure breeds as well. Our girls have been lovely and she was very helpful when I thought Bubbles had an impacted crop (she didnt, I had new chicken owner disease and worried about everything ), I rang her and she gave me advice over the phone. Dont go to Perfect Poultry in Ligh"Ooops, word censored!"er - not good! Rokers in Worplesdon have hybrids as well, but not any Silkies or pure breeds. Photos when chosen please! Redwing
Surrey Poultry have new enthusiastic Omlet friendly owners - not sure what sort of birds they sell though In general the Barnevelder should be fine with a Silkie and LS, Marans can be a bit more problematic and vary in temperment I'd always recommend Wyandottes but then I am biased! Orpington bantams are very nice though

SeramaSilly
Yes I agree with Redwing. I have a marans bantam and she is a feisty madam who can be quite a bully and pecks me regularly! Sophie x
chuckmum6
My marans had slightly different temperaments, one was very sweet and gentle, while the other was handy with her beak when there was a newcomer. Other than that they were lovely girls and they laid all through the winter!
