Stand Mixers

Recommended Posts

My mum and nana are going to buy me a stand mixer for christmas this year (it's the only thing I really really really want but couldn't possibly afford).

I'm in love with the look and range of colours of the KitchenAid stand mixer, has anyone got one? How does it compare to say, Breville, or Kenwood (or 'Ready Steady Cook' - that's an argos special!) ?

I would obviously prefer the best performing one, but I would love a pretty colour, too!

Any suggestions on where to get the best bargains would be good too - as £350 is a liiiiiiiiittle too much over budget

I love the kitchenaid ones too. They sometime have some on offer here http://www.hartsofstur.com but obviously you will be restricted with colour.

Have heard good things about kenwood, but obviously they don't have the look.

How lucky are you! I've been hinting for years that I'd like one but to no avail. If you are near a john lewis they have both the kitchenaid and Kenwood so you could go and see in real life which you think you'd prefer, the staff are usually pretty good and knoweledgable too.

:( I would like a raspberry or cobalt one - or maybe green

I'm searching amazon and ebay like a woman possessed for bargains! I did spot a nicely coloured kenwood one on the John Lewis website though, called 'firecracker', and stripey patterns :)

it's a bit better than 'white' or 'chrome' but still pushing £400

Check out Steamer Trading who have a few shops in Sussex. I bought my Kitchenaid mixer in there on offer a couple of years ago. Some of the colours get discontinued and they can be as much as £100 cheaper - you have to be quick to spot the offer though as they sell out really quickly

Thanks! that's a good tip!

I love my Kitchenaid and wouldn't be without it now. I think I got mine from Harts of Stow in the Wold which was the best buy at the time.

I've heard nothing but good things about them and I'm so so envious of everyone who has one  £377 is the cheapest I've found it so far!

Well, I have a Kenwood Chef that's still going strong after 20 years, and my mother's (which gave me the clue back then that it'd be a good buy) is still perfectly happy after about 30. Both are white and still looking just as white as when they were bought, so have clocked up a lot of unexciting years churning out good food.

Does anyone have a stand mixer and a food processor ? I'm leaning towards going the food processor route but like the look of the stand mixers as well and since I have until Christmas to decide...

I might get a cheapy food processor for liquidising things, but otherwise the mixers I'm looking at do have attachments that can grind, slice, shred, etc. The kitchenaid one has sausage stuffer and pasta making attachments :)

Yes. Me.

I have a Kenwood Chef and a Kenwood Gourmet (not sure they make them any more). I use them for completely different reasons, and both are still functionally perfect after well over 20 years and 15 years respectively. That said, some items (blades, spatulas etc.) have worn out, but have been replaced at very reasonable cost courtesy of Kenwood's excellent after sales service and support.

The Chef is far better at mixing (dough, cakes etc.) and whisking larger quantities of things (double cream, egg whites for meringues and so on). The processor is understandably better at blitzing stuff (smooth pates and soups, for instance) and whisking smaller quantities (one or two egg whites to incorporate into something you're mixing in the Chef, for instance), and it's excellent at creaming butter and sugar together (think apple crumble, so obviously indispensible).

I'd go so far as to say that if one packed up now, I wouldn't bother trying to work out if I could make do; I'd wander straight out and get a replacement, and almost certainly from Kenwood at that.

Interesting, Major B - I always rub the fat into the flour for crumble, and then stir the sugar in!

Well, OK, I've been caught typing with brain only half engaged. You're right, of course; for a crumble I chuck the butter in the flour, not the sugar, blitz it with the food processor and then chuck the sugar in later on. However, I still stand by what I say - the food processor is excellent at creaming butter and sugar together too.
