bronze
Completely OT but I've reached the end of my carpet scrubbing tether what with three children and a dog with a stomach complaint. I've given in and have decided to get on of those carpet cleaners. You know the ones that look like an upright vacuum cleaner. Has anyone got one? Any recommendations because I just look at them all and feel swamped.
Guest
I hire one from a dry cleaners or hardware store.
bronze
Thats what we were going to do but kept putting it off for when Roos stomach cleared up. Which it never has. Its an onrunning thing hence the havingone in the house (also cheaper for us in the long run)
Jools
I've had two over the years. First off I got something like this one (but much older as it was years and years ago: http://www.vax.co.uk/shop/product_detail.php?productID=1 Then last year I got one of these when my old one gave up the ghost: http://www.vax.co.uk/shop/catalogue.php?type=2 The first one was great because it doubled as a hoover too, but I found it hard work for my back when shampooing with it, but then I have a dodgy back. The new one does a really good job at getting rid of pet mishaps and it's much easier to use on carpets - no more back ache. There are attachments too for curtains and upholstery, but I haven't gone that far yet! I'd be very interested in any products to use with the machine though that are environmentally friendly - somehow I don't think the ones Vax supply with the machine are that green! bronze
Thanks I had looked at vax as they are such a well know brand and as that type of thing is their speciality The green thing is what has put me off til now. I don't know enough about them to know what I could try instead. thing I'll get one then worry later.... maybe soapnut liquid? Which one of them is your latest one? I get a link to the page, thanks

Charlottechicken
I haven't got a carpet cleaner, but am impressed by the vax range which I have seen on QVC. They have quite a range on there, and there are video demonstrations (which I can't watch on my dial-up ). There are some models for less than £100. The modern ones use such small amounts of water too. Here's a link (don't forget they charge for p+p); QVC Vax selection
Sheilaz
I bought a Vax recently when Comet had a bargain offer. I had one 20 years ago (prompted by toddler rubbing tub of Sudocrem into the carpet ) and it was cumbersome to use with tubes etc. The modern one is good, but I haven't researched any others. One Man Banned
Good luck with your search - if it helps we made a bad choice in coloured carpet for this house.....cream With two often clumsy adults doing other things while carrying drinks etc, a dog who doesn't always wait to have her paws wiped, several friends who are not the best at holding a glass of wine once they've had a few and the owner (me )who's always "just running in the house" from the garden, with muddy shoes!! We bought a Bissell Carpet cleaner - like an upright but far more sturdy than the vax one looked at. It's not cheap at £200 but it really does do a good job - we try to clean our carpets once a month now just to keep them fresh and clean. As for cleaning fluid, we use the one Bissell make with added Scothguard that you can get in Curry's, Comet etc. As we don't need to use too much I can't worry about the chemicals as at least it won't damage the machine that I couldn't live without. Hope this helps A xx
Jools
I tend to agree with you about the residue and relentless cleaning cycle. My cream lounge carpet looks great immediately after cleaning, but then a month or so later, the stains re-surface. I would always resist starting the cleaning cycle, but once you've started (dogs, split wine, etc etc) you just can't stop. Where do you get one of these monsters from? bronze
Problem is I would need to own one of those Daniel Its just too expensive to keep calling one out the amount I would need it. Shiela Strangely enough it was a pot of sudocrem and one last dog mess that made decide I AM gettin gone andrew you havent helped. I now have two recommendations for bissell and two for vax Think I may have to get DH to have a reead of some reviews. thanks for the replies people Edited June 19, 2007 by Guest
bronze
And costs a fortune to change to Plus the insulation would all be lost, and watching the dog would be a laugh . We're trying to create more not less (insulation that is). I can see where you are coming from but with all the kids and the dog I would probably have big spills and marks to clear up pretty regularly so extra dirt accumalating probably wouldnt bother me as much as those cleaner mortals as I would be having to do it quite often anyway. Olly
Sorry I can't make any recommendations, I've only ever hired cleaners, I just wanted to say that I do sympathise; it's the downside of having pets! I'd also recommend hard flooring, but it's not a cheap option if you've already got carpets. My non-pet-owning friends always look horrified when the rest of us start comparing stories of sick, poo and pawmarks! I have had to throw out two duvets, (not covers, the actual thing) after an unfortunate digestive episode with the cat but I wouldn't be without him. The Dogmother
I'll echo Dan on the hard floors thing. I have and have always had a collection of animals, and have never been that fond of carpet. Luckily, I live in a Victorian house, so I have stripped and varnished the original floor boards, which are lovely, a quick hoover and flick round with a mop are all it needs. The kitchen and utility roms have tiled floors, so easy to scrub.
buffie
we use a steam cleaner, no chemicals and has worked well for the past 2 years or more. BBx Oh and we have 3 cats, daisie the boxer and 2 messy adults (us)
bronze
We got the vax this morning and it is fab. I'm not embarrassed to open my front door anymore. We did go over it again with just water in the solution tank to help combat any residue but knowing our lot it'll need to be done again anyway because of an 'accident' so general increase of dirt levels wouldnt worry us. DH was bouncing he was so chuffed with it. Wonder whn the novelty will wear off
The Dogmother
Tell you what though, I was glad of the wooden floors when Rosie was a baby and went through a projectile vomiting phase
