The great 2012 declutter!

Recommended Posts

Anyone up for this? Just been searching for something in a kitchen cabinet (a space actually  ) and realised I have loads of out of date stuff which really needs to go. I've got some reorganising to do in the house in general and need extra storage space for things I do need on a daily basis so will be doing a room by room thorough deep cleanse!

I'm starting with the kitchen, not sure yet how this will turn out and how I will cope if I have to part with any chickenalia. There's an awful lot of Christmas food still to eat up in the cupboards too to free up some space

I may start with something simple, like the cutlery drawer. Actually, I think there's a lot of odd bits and pieces in there, like straws off those little tetra pak drinks  I also need some shelving in the loft to store all my cordial bottles when they are empty, and the brewing buckets etc, as they really clutter the top of the cabinets up!

I'll grab a bin bag.......

... and I'm right behind you with that binbag! I always feel inspired to throw stuff out at this time of year, and I need to declutter too. Flylady has helped, but I have a lot of drawers and cupboards that still need attention.

Remember - do you love it? Does it make you smile? If not, why are you keeping it!

And so am I! After getting my Kindle, I'm going to be ruthless with the books. Charity shops here I come!

Mind you, I've already had some help de-cluttering from son number 3 who came over for Christmas. I still can't find a whole load of things I know were there before he arrived. Last time he " helped", I lost my handbag, had to cancel all the cards etc, then found it at the bottom of the laundry basket where said son had " tidied" it, then tidied dirty clothes on too of it!

Ooh, glad I'm not alone!

I'm off to grab a bin bag in a mo and have a go at the things I know need chucking. I'm embarrassed to say there's half a bag of pumpkin seeds and some very old herbs and spices to go. It's going to be difficult throwing storage containers out though, and I've acquired another handy Roses tin too this year, but the loft needs sorting too so no point putting it up there.

I can see the charity shops getting fed up of me, I have a giftaid number and the lady in the local hospice shop now knows my name and number when I go in :lol:

Well, the cutlery drawer was a bit of a revelation! Some bits and bobs in the wrong place and lots and lots of plastic cutlery and tiny straws!!

I've done the fridge too, salad drawer has been washed and some old home made jam to go out and some old mayonnaise. Found a pack of cheap cream cheese and some shivelled up cherry tomatoes too

Now to the food cupboards!

Well done Claire!

We've been de-cluttering over the break too; two bin bags have already gone to the local hospice shop, and there's more. I have finally bitten the bullet and opened a paypal account - I sold Rosie's old antique pine sleigh bed for £170, which is more than I paid for it in the first place! 8)8) She had outgrown it and it was cluttering the place up.

Rosie has turfed lots of stuff out, and I have been sorting through all the archive boxes in the attic in an attempt to reduce the number of them. I have loads more stuff to ebay, and even more to freegle or go to the charity shop. 8)

Wow Clare, result on the bed 8)

I've found some old cookie cutters I've never used, and some snazzy drinking straws, they are off to a little girl who lives down the road, along with some cake decorating moulds she can use with her play dough, and a chicken egg cup and plastic walking chicken. Nice to think they'll get used. The chickens will be having a treat of out of date cous cous this weekend too!

Taking down the decorations at the mo, but I can't bear to part with any of the decorations I don't use regularly, just in case I need them in the future. Think I'll keep them for now.

Found a set of lovely Lakeland leaf cookie cutters I need to price up and put on ebay too.

I'm definitely going to downsize my Christmas decorations as I pack them away, they are all over the spare bed at the moment! I put up a lot fewer than usual this year, and it didn't seem to make it less Christmassy but it was less work, so I think a few of mine can go.

I had put some 'farmyard animal' cookie cutters into the charity-shop bag, but have just realised that although they're rather large for biscuits they are perfect for shapes for applique - I'm getting into sewing/crafting, and these are just the right size! If I can manage it, I may take them out and draw round them, save the patterns somewhere safe, and then put them back in the bag.

De-cluttering is good for the soul! I need to have another go at my bedroom soon - I have stuff in my wardrobe that is too big for me now, I wore a "favourite" blouse from Principles (miss them) last week and it swamped me - but still washed it and hung it back up..........pass me a charity bag!

I took 5 bags of DD old toys to our local charity shop last week. She hasn't noticed them missing with all the new ones Santa brought.

Over the year we aquired 3 sit on trike things/ 2 scooters and loads of other stuff passed down.

That's a great idea, Olly 8)

Cookie cutters are also great for using with needle felt to make a neat shape.

I'm inspired to sort out my handbag now, I've been living out of it for the last few days while Lauren was in hospital - I may be gone some time........... and I need to remove the dog poo bag full of toast........

Well, Rosie has halved her considerable book collection - some of them really were too young for her now. Too late to go to the charity shop at the weekend though

I went through another couple of boxes in the attic and freecycled a big bag full of office type envelopes. The pile for ebaying is growing so I must get photos taken so that I can sell it all.

I'm still decluttering the kitchen. Passed an unwanted storage jar to a friend, found several old 'Olive' magazines and some wipe clean Delia Smith cookery cards and will pass those on too. Sat here sorting a box of old recipes out to go into a great recipe book I was given for Christmas (full of plastic leaves to stick your own snippets in!).

Tomorrow evening I'll be tidying up some Christmas leftovers (wine and nibbles  )

Think I'll be making the first charity shop donation trip of 2012 on Saturday morning :)

 It's still decluttering! Do what Flylady recommends - put the bags straight into the car boot, then next time you're passing the charity shop they will be there (and they'll annoy you so much every time you open the boot, you'll make sure you are passing it!).

I sorted out a lot of cards last night. I am always buying birthday cards, useful blank cards etc and then I can't find them when I want them. I won a lovely card-sorting box before Christmas, so now the good ones are all organised in that, and quite a few others are in the charity bag. Some of them, I can't imagine why I bought them at all - others (engagement, christening) were obviously bought for a special occasion and then mislaid, so I had to buy another one.

I put 3 bin bags full of old clothes and shoes out for the Sally Army collection yesterday. Very satisfying! I'm now tempted to have a go at moving all of OH's brewing buckets up to the loft and out of the garage - they take up so much space! I might even have a go at moving his (sorry, don't know the real names of em!) big metal apple scratter (which scrunches up the apples) and apple squisher (big wooden apple press) things as well...although maybe a bit too heavy.

Would love to be able to get my poor car into the garage....her roof is going mouldy

Well so far this year we'vve taken some stuff to the charity shop, sold some old radiators and copper piping to the s"Ooops, word censored!" metal man and chopped up all the free wood we had stored in the garage.

We're going to start going through our CD's and DVD's and sell those we don't watch or listen to anymore.

We're finally clearing one of our sheds that partially fell down in the snow last year and finally succumbed in the storm last week - we've only been here 11 years and did intend to clear it when we first moved in

It has been really satisfying especially as we've found loads of wood for the burner that I've cut up with the chainsaw, and also a pile of lead in the back corner that has gone to the s"Ooops, word censored!" man :) .

Even the neighbours have complimented us on our work so I think it may have been a bit of an eye sore for them  . Anyway still loads to do ( it's a massive shed) but really feel we are making progress.

Ooh, well done, that sounds like a major declutter of the garden. Bet you can't wait to do more now!

Still chucking things out here, although been out to Redditch this morning and managed to pick up a top and a duvet cover in the charity shops, top was a pound and the double duvet cover, with embroidered daisies on was £3.50, and in perfect condition :). I'm now doing all rooms simultaneously, it appears to be working so far.

I'm decluttering my life a drawer at a time
