Impacted Crop -Sad update

Recommended Posts

Dot has an impacted crop and we are giving her Liquid paraffin and massage. My question is how should we massage?

Just a general squeeze and round movement, or should we be trying to push some of the impaction down into her stomach? the impaction is quite hard, like a load of seed.

We are giving her 2ml of the oil at a time, is that the right amount a few times a day. She is an Ancona Bantam.

Hubby has gone out to try to get some white maggots, but not sure if she will eat those yet, never tried that method before. Any advice, tips very welcome. Why do these things always happen at week-ends!

White maggots usually work brilliantly, in my experience. Sometimes chickens can be a bit reluctant to eat them if you put out a huge mass of them together but will gobble them up if you put a handful out at a time.

Re the crop massage: I don't know the official technique but I try to break up any large masses. I don't try to force anything downwards.

Good luck.

Thanks for the tip Egghead68, she won't eat the maggots and isn't drinking.

She is just laying quietly, but not looking good.

We have given her a 2ml of water with Avipro, one dose of Nutri-drops and 2 x 1.5ml of paraffin plus massage.

Will repeat water and oil later, she seems to be struggling to stand up now.

She was full of beans and fine on Friday. :anxious::(

you'll achieve as much, and keep her hydrated, by syringing a good cropful of avipro water into her. If you can get as much into her as you can and keep massaging her crop you will not only break up the impaction but you'll get vital fluids into her too.

don't fret about overdosing, you can't really do that with avipro (it's essentially chicken yoghurt) and you will probably find she'll perk up with the rehydration and it may be enough to break up some of the impacted clumps.

Depending on what she's impacted with, though, it may be hard going to shift. I have both success and failure with impacted crops.... good luck!

Sorry to hear that - very unusual in a pure breed, especially one as small as an Ancona.

You're doing everything you can, so continue, and take Laurie's excellent advice as well. You need to knead the crop between your thumb and next two fingers to break up the contents. If it doesn't shift, the options are either an op to shift the blockage, or that she actually has a problem further down her digestive system, which isn't good news I'm afraid.

Sadly, Dot died last evening.

Owing to the suddenness, we arranged a pm which showed she had visceral gout in what was her only kidney.

Her crop and gizzard contained substantial amounts of seed indicating she had gorged it on Friday evening and had failed to digest it.

Thank you all for suggesting treatment for trying to break down the blockage.

She was my friendliest and noisiest chicken and the one that, as soon as she saw me, would run to me from wherever she was in the garden. What a welcome she always gave me, today seemed empty without her bok bok bok waaaaahs.

Love you darling Dot.
