IBS anyone?

Recommended Posts

I need the help of the all knowing Omleteers  At last I'm begining to feel human again after battling various health issues over the last few years and then my tummy probs started up again worse than ever. Coeliac screen was negative thank goodness so GP thinks its bad IBS. There is so much conflicting information out there, do we have any experts looking in today?

I used to suffer from it when I was younger.... I found it was food related but compounded with stress... So if I was stressed and didn't eat the foods that flaired it I was fine, if I just ate the food I had some problems, but if I ate the food with stress.... Horrendous! To be the point where I was doubled up in agony :(

The food that flaired it up for me (which I still avoid when I can) were processed bread (I'm fine with bread I make myself), some preservatives in prepared foods (now make everything from scratch) and cucumber. I can also only ever have one banana at a time, if I have 2 it causes pain

There are some anti spasm medications you can get, but I found that they gave me terrible constipation (I think most IBS suffers go one way or another :anxious: My poor friend who gets it gets awful dioherrea with it, it's dairy products that flair it with her mainly)

So I am by no means an expert, but I do have my personal experiences. My advice (which you've probably already been given) is to keep a food diary to look for triggers... And to monitor how stress you feel every day...

I hope that you will be OK soon... It can be very debilitating :(

I was diagnosed with acid reflux and IBS. The Dr's blood test came back negative but I was so run down all the time. In the end I paid for an intolerance test and it was the best thing I ever did! I am intolerant to cows milk and yeast and mildly intolerant to peas/lentil/haricot (no more than 1-2 times a week) I was fairly sceptical but desperate as well, I would take anti biotics more than I wouldn't over winter with chest infections etc. I have asthma as well.

I had this done in Sep 2010 ant I have never felt so well, I think I've had to have anti biotics 3 times in 15 months. I have more energy and look better - not so pale. My IBS symptoms have disappeared, they only come back if I've over indulged with bread or dairy. Easy enough to avoid, I have goats milk and eat a lot of wraps

I've had several patients with it Tiggy, but it does seem to vary so much from one person to the other. :? The commonest aggravator is certainly stress, after that it is very individual, as Space Chick has found. :( Antispasmodics may be worth a try, and it may be worth seeing a dietician to try to find a diet that suits you the best. Hope you manage to get it under control xx

I must admit its gone on for 30 years but Ive been on & off steroids for brittle asthma most of that time so I'd only get intermittent flare ups. Now my asthma has been better controlled in the last year Ive not needed steroids and my tummy has been horredous! I know alcohol sets me off :( and mackrel so I suppose its just a process of illimination for anything else. I dont want to turn into one of those people who can't go out for dinner and make family & friends dread me comming round. It is a bit of a mine field

Used to suffer, but once I realised that bread, eggs, pastry, cakes, in fact anything rich affected me I improved. It was worse when I was preparing my (home-schooled) kids for exams which I found terrifying so stress as well.

This is not a recommendation, simply what I took to help on worst days - painkillers to deal with cramp and pepto bismol to settle tummy. Don't think Doc approved but it worked for me. Also that calming stuff that comes in a small bottle with a dropper. Can't remember the name, that was good too.

No thanks - I have enough of my own

Seriously though. I have had it for 8 years or so. Started after I had my kids, and my tolerance to certain foods went downhill. Started off with curry. Then I couldn't eat lettuce. And then cheese, particularly melted ie on toast on in a sauce. I used to love cheese, but since cutting right back what I eat, I don't really miss it. I have a little snack of it every now and then (usually with some red wine). I did try pills, but prefer to manage it myself. I suppose at least I know what affects me.

I was gonna say no thanks as well - I think I have it mildly and stress of which working in the NHS there is lots doesnt help. I try to eat healthily and I am sure caffiene doesnt help - I try not to dwell on it as I have to put up with my my dads IBS - I feel i know his bowels inside and out - I am not being flippant - he is a bowel bore. Aloe vera juice is s'pose to help some people and I think I read artichoke tablets help too.

Hope you get it sorted.

I was diagnosed with IBS in 2010. An american friend who also suffers recommended a certain supplement containing acidolphilus. The exact supplement she recommended wasn't available over here but found this one which I get online from Holland and Barrett.

I was really scepticle because I've always distrusted the efficacy of health food supplements but I have to say it's turned things around for me. No more bloating, no more pain, no more discomfort. It's also helped generally because I have to take quite a lot of antibiotics so the more 'friendly bacteria' (hate that term!) in my gut the better.

I take one or two tablets a day and sometimes have a little break and then go back to them when I feel the need. Holland and Barrett also quite often have a 3 or 2 or BOGOF deal or similar so I stock up then and the price doesn't seem too bad.

I also modified my diet slightly and eat more barley and oats which has probably done me good but, to be honest, I didn't eat really badly before - I rarely eat anything processed and make almost everything from scratch which then gets frozen in batches. I've never eaten a lot of dairy anyway because I've never liked the taste much but I'm told cutting down helps most people.

I hope you find a solution.

Yup, I have had it too for the last 30 years, I seem to struggle with hard fruit and some veg - especially cauliflower, broccoli and any veg cooked al dente, (has to be cooked within an inch of its life and very soggy :( ) also Quorn, and mushrooms. It is usually compounded significantly by stress and worse when I am dehydrated, as I am frequently constipated when I have an attack (stop me if this is too much information  )

Severe attacks can go on for 8 or 10 hours without relief. No medication I have ever tried has ever worked, and my patent cure is simply ho"Ooops, word censored!"er bottles as hot as I can bear on my stomach and small of my back, which seems to reduce the effect of the excrutiating cramps, and sitting quietly sipping water. However every case is particular to the patient and no cure works for every patient. I have had all the tests possible to rule out anything else, but no real solution was offered to me. You basically have to keep a food/mood/everything else diary and spot patterns that may be causing it, then find treatments which work for you.

Sorry not to be more of a help, it can be a miserable condition, until you find ways to manage it.

Good luck!

OH suffers but he is also lactose intolerant so avoids dairy.

Mushrooms , mars bars and lots of spice cause problems as does stress......being forces means he avoids what he can, when he can, funny how compo never affects him , or deployment.

Which proves to me Diet is the main devil at work here and his nervous energy gets eaten up by adrenalin, he seems to thrive on it. Only suffers when home and eats Bad things.( He just loves cheese.)

Mine was caused by diary which happened literally overnight. 24 years down the line it seems to have resolved itself as quickly as it came!!

A friends is triggered by wheat. By making own bread & cakes seems to keep it under control.

Good luck as I know it can be very draining.
