pips_pekins
Not me but my bantam naked neck has started sleeping in the nest box. I put aubiose in the nest but have not blocked the hole up. I just wondered if I should do something to stop her or leave her to it. She doesn't seem to be being bullied by the others. She just seems to like her own sleeping space. blueandwhite
Both mine (chickens) sleep in there, a tussle every night! I did try to stop them by lifting them onto the roosting bars once asleep, putting a plantpot in there (they just kicked it over and kind of slept around it!) So I gave up. But now, as they poo in the nest box, I have to clean it out before I go to work. So this morning I'm out in the pouring rain sorting it out. Also sometimes they have already laid their eggs when I go out, not sure how that would work if they couldn't get to it. They seem so happy snuggled up together ... jackian
Mine are the same , 3 out of 4 sleep in the nesting box..I have been poop scooping this morning before their egg laying starts (spoilt ) The odd times they have laid before I get there they funnily enough usually miss the poo
Pearls007
I have a classic and if I do not put a football in the nestbox overnight Hendrix will sleep there. I personally think that 6.15 in the morning is no time for poo scooping (especially in the bleak midwinter ) so the football goes in when I shut the girls in the run at dusk. Besides - I think it it better if Rosie has her sister to snuggle up to rather than roosting on her own. I always think Hendrix looks smug and Rosie sad if the football solution is not applied! Duncan08
All three of my hybrids managed to sleep on top of each other in the nestbox of the The Pooey eggs were a problem, and I did try a big upturned plant pot, to be honest though I gave up as that was obviously where they were most comfortable. Now I have my , the girls no longer sleep in the nest box so I am a happy lady
percy049
Our light sussex hybrid and bluebelle take it in turns to sleep in the nest box. There isn't too many dropping in the nest box, but we do have to regularly clean it out, and have the odd pooey egg. We tried putting a flowerpot in the nest box to block it off, but it scared them in the mornings when they kept knocking against it and made them squawk
The Dogmother
I stop mine from sleeping in the nest box - it makes it filthy and the warmth makes the more susceptible to mites. I find that the smallest size Tubtrug fits nicely in the round port between the roosting bars and the nest box.
