I seem to remember that somebody on this forum bought quite a few friesian fowl from the Wernlas collection when he retired.I was wondering if they were then going on to breed them? Redwing Posted January 27, 2012 Share Posted January 27, 2012 I bought a lot of chickens from Wernlas, the Friesians I ended up with were a mistake (they were chicks and sold as something else) I passed those on to someone who wanted to breed them but the birds were young so unlikely to produce chicks any time soon It's worth contacting Stuart who is the secretary of the Rare Poultry Society, he will probably have a list if which members breed Friesians, a bit of Googling should find his number Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have found an article in a back print of practical Poultry and they did a special focus on the Friesian fowl and Stuarts number is at the end of the article. So thanks for your help. I was very pleased to see pictures of two friesian fowl on their home page. I know that area as we used to live in Derby and then Burton and we often go back up that way to visit friends. Epona Posted February 3, 2012 Share Posted February 3, 2012 As I'm wife hunting for my bachelor group I'm constantly keeping an eye out for stock coming available. Unfortunately for me most stock seems to be like the ad listed today, at other ends of the country to me. Here in the Midlands there seems to be a deficit of certain breeds in general.....we're like the Bermuda Triangle for chickens! Actually thinkin of arranging to get some sent in from Holland as curious about some of the other colours that strangely have not made it to this country. Epona Posted July 31, 2012 Share Posted July 31, 2012 Friesian egglets arrived fresh from Holland this weekend after a lot of emails back and forth to a very helpful Dutch friesian club. 13 egglets of the true Bantam (Official breed size: rooster bantam: 700 - 800 gram, hen bantam: 600 - 700 gram) in the Geelwitpel ie Chamois pencilled. 16 egglets of the standard/LF (Oficial breed size: Rooster large: 1400 - 1600 gram, hen large: 1200 - 1400 gram) in the Roodpel ... similar colour to the Derby Redcap....so a new colour for this country. 10 egglets of standard size Friesians of unknown colour but suspect are the Geelwitpel (awaiting confirmation from my contact! Chartley Chucks kindly helping me incubate them. Our aim is to introduce new blood to existing stock as my research strongly suggests that all or existing flocks are to some extent related and trace back to the original Wenlass strains so desperately in need of new lines. The plan is that now I have an open line with Holland to steadily bring more egglets with some of the other gorgeous colours to establish breeding lines here. To improve breeding strains and protect colours the Dutch actually operate breed improvement by putting the Bantam strains to the Lf. You potentially get 50% egglets hatch as bantam and 50% LF in first generation then brred the large offspring to other large (dito with with the bantams) and next generation from the large birds you will get just 25% are bantam stock (again same ration for the bantam brreding you get 25% LF)...and so on steadily down the line breeding truer to whichever size it is. So our new bantam chamois chooks can be used here to expand and strengthen our LF stock as well. So o anyone now asking if there are any Bantam Friesians in the UK the answer with fingers crossed is that by end of August there will be bantam chicklets running about and more next year, and hopefully a few more colours to enjoy in the future.
